Milwaukee SHOCKWAVE Impact Bit PH3, 25 mm, 4932500354

Milwaukee 4932500354 is an impact bit from the SHOCKWAVE Impact Duty range in PH3, 25 mm long. The fitting is a 1/4" hex and the pack contains 3 pieces per pack.

The PH3 recess

PH3 is the large cross-head size. It appears on bigger timber and sheet-metal screws, where PH2 already slips in the recess. If a PH2 bit cams out and chews the head, the usual reason is that the screw wants PH3.

What SHOCK ZONE is

An impact driver does not deliver torque smoothly - it delivers it in blows, hundreds of times a minute. Each blow is an abrupt spike in load, and that is what breaks ordinary bits: the energy reaches the tip and snaps it off.

SHOCK ZONE is a section of the shank with a reduced diameter, designed to twist elastically. It absorbs the blow and returns it like a spring, instead of passing it to the tip. Together with a special heat treatment it gives the bit a property that sounds contradictory for hardened steel: it flexes rather than breaks.

The 25 mm length

25 mm is the short "insert" standard. The bit goes into a magnetic holder or straight into the impact driver's chuck. The advantage of the short length is stability: the shorter the bit, the less runout at the tip and the more accurately it seats in the recess.

Making them last

Most bits do not wear out - they break from bad technique. Three rules cover almost everything: hold the machine square to the screw axis - angled load concentrates in one corner of the tip; release the trigger the moment the head seats - every further blow only fatigues the bit; and never work a chewed-out recess - there the bit spins in the void, heats up and wears out in minutes.

Questions and Answers

What recess does the bit have?

PH3, 25 mm long, with a 1/4" hex fitting.

What does SHOCK ZONE do?

It is a reduced-diameter section of the shank that twists elastically and absorbs the blow like a spring instead of passing it to the tip. With the special heat treatment the bit flexes rather than breaks.

Why does an impact driver need a special bit?

Because an impact driver delivers torque in blows, hundreds of times a minute. Each blow is an abrupt load spike, and that is exactly what snaps the tip off an ordinary bit.

Does it work in an ordinary drill driver?

Yes - the fitting is a standard 1/4" hex. The bit runs in both types of machine; the impact rating simply is not fully used in a machine without impact.

Why only 25 mm long?

That is the short "insert" standard. The shorter the bit, the less runout at the tip and the more accurately it seats. For extra reach, use a magnetic holder.

How do I stop breaking bits?

Three rules: machine square to the screw axis, release the trigger as the head seats, and never work a chewed-out recess - there the bit spins in the void and wears out in minutes.

Is a holder needed?

Not necessarily - the bit goes straight into the impact driver chuck. A magnetic holder does, however, also hold the screw while you place it one-handed, which at height often decides the job.
