DeWalt EXTREME IMPACT T10 Bits, 57 mm, 5 Pieces, DT7393T-QZ

DeWalt DT7393T-QZ is a pack of 5 impact bits in T10, 57 mm long. The bits have an extended torsion zone and are made for impact drivers.

The T10 recess

T10 is a small Torx size. The six-lobe profile transmits force perpendicular to the walls of the recess rather than at an angle - so a Torx bit does not cam out and needs no constant end pressure on the machine.

At small sizes like T10 that matters even more: a thin cross recess would chew out at the first serious load, while Torx takes it. That is why T10 turns up on furniture fittings, electrical boxes, appliances and housings.

The torsion zone

An impact driver delivers torque in pulses, hundreds of times a minute. Without a torsion zone every pulse goes straight into the tip and eventually snaps it. An extended torsion zone is a narrowed section of the shank that twists elastically and absorbs the blow before it reaches the tip.

The 57 mm length

57 mm is the middle length. It gives more clearance than a short 25 mm bit - the driver nose does not foul the workpiece - and stays more stable than the long 90 and 157 mm bits, where any tilt of the machine is multiplied.

Why five pieces

A bit is a consumable, and small Torx sizes like T10 are also the most fragile: the tip is thin and unforgiving of a tilted machine. Five pieces means a broken bit does not stop the job.

T10 versus TX10

T10, TX10 and Torx 10 are the same profile - only the maker's notation differs. Watch out for TR10 though: that is the security version with a pin in the centre, which will not accept a normal T10 bit and turns up on covers and housings the maker would rather you did not open.

Questions and Answers

How many bits are in the pack?

5 pieces, all T10 at 57 mm.

What is the difference between Torx and a cross head?

Torx transmits force perpendicular to the walls of the recess rather than at an angle. The bit does not cam out, needs no constant pressure and practically never chews the head.

Can I use a hex key instead of Torx?

No. A hex bears on only three points in a Torx recess and rounds it out at the first serious load.

What does the torsion zone do?

It twists elastically and absorbs the impact pulse before it reaches the tip. Without it every blow goes straight into the tip and snaps it.

Why 57 mm?

57 mm gives more clearance - the driver nose does not foul the workpiece - and stays more stable than the long 90 and 157 mm bits.

Do they work in an ordinary drill?

Yes. The fitting is a standard 1/4" hex and the bits run in either type of machine.

Why do small Torx bits break more often?

Because their tips are thin and unforgiving of a tilted machine. At T10 any angled load concentrates in a very small area - which is why they are sold in multi-packs.
