Bosch PRO HEX-5 Masonry Drill Bit, Ø10 x 150 mm, 2608706990
Bosch 2608706990 is a drill bit for concrete, stone and brick from the PRO HEX-5 range, 10 mm in diameter with a 100 mm working length and 150 mm overall. The shank is hexagonal. Bosch states up to twice the life of a CYL-3 drill bit.
The hex shank
This is what separates HEX-5 from ordinary masonry bits. Instead of a cylindrical shank, which spins in place in a three-jaw chuck under resistance, the shank here is hexagonal. The result is a strong connection and full torque transmission.
More importantly, it changes where you can work: a hex shank also fits a 1/4" holder on an impact driver. That means drilling concrete with the machine already in your hand, instead of carrying a separate rotary hammer for a handful of holes.
The tip
The tip has a continuous carbide edge - the cutting plate runs across the whole tip rather than being made of separate segments. That is precisely what lets the bit survive impact mode, in which a segmented edge chips at the corners.
The carbide composition is specially chosen for hard materials, and beneath the cutting edge sits a large opening that clears dust effectively. That second point matters more than it sounds: dust left in the hole gets ground over and over, heats the tip, and is the main reason masonry bits go blunt.
How to use it
The bit is for an impact drill, drill driver or impact driver. In hammer mode press steadily and along the axis - a masonry bit does not cut, it crushes the material, and excessive pressure only heats the tip. On a deep hole, withdraw the bit periodically to let the dust out.
The 10 x 150 size
Ø10 mm is the size for a 10 mm plug - the most-used fixing for brackets, shelves, radiators and sanitaryware. The 150 mm working length reaches through plaster into the structural substrate, and the 150 mm overall leaves enough for the chuck.

Questions and Answers
Why a hex shank?
For a strong connection and full torque transmission. A cylindrical shank spins in place in the chuck under resistance. A hex shank also fits a 1/4" holder on an impact driver.
Can I drill with an impact driver?
Yes - that is HEX-5's main point. The continuous carbide edge is built to withstand impact loading, where a segmented tip chips away.
Does it fit a rotary hammer?
Not directly - the shank is hexagonal, not SDS-plus. The bit is intended for impact drills and drivers; a rotary hammer needs SDS-shank bits.
Which wall plug is Ø10 for?
A 10 mm plug - the most-used size for brackets, shelves, radiators and sanitaryware.
Why does the opening under the edge matter?
Because it clears the dust. Dust left in the hole is ground over and over and heats the tip - the main reason masonry bits lose their edge.
How deep a hole does it make?
Working length is 150 mm out of 150 mm overall - enough to go through plaster into the structural substrate, with the remainder held in the chuck.
How hard should I press?
Steadily and along the axis. A masonry bit crushes rather than cuts - too much pressure only heats the tip. On a deep hole, withdraw the bit periodically to clear dust.

Hawera Power Ceramics Tile Drill Bit, Ø5 mm, Hex Shank, 266444
Hawera Power Ceramics 266444 is a ceramic drill bit of Ø5 mm with a carbide tip and a 1/4 inch hex shank. It is made for ceramic tile, wall tile, porcelain stoneware and other hard ceramic materials.
Why ceramics need their own bit
The glaze on a tile is harder and more brittle than the ceramic beneath it. An ordinary masonry bit has a wide, blunt tip - it does not cut the glaze but presses until it cracks, breaking a piece out around the hole. A ceramic bit has a sharp spear point that bites into the glaze from the first moment and cuts rather than shatters.
No hammer
This is the rule broken most often: in tile you work on rotation only. Hammer action applies to the glaze exactly the load it cannot take - the result is a star-shaped crack around the hole that shows for good. If the machine has no way to switch hammering off, use an ordinary drill.
Starting the hole
A smooth glaze is slippery and the bit wanders on first contact, leaving a scratch. The two reliable methods are tape over the spot to give grip, or starting at an angle and gradually righting the drill once the point has bitten.
Cooling
Ceramic carries no heat away. Drilling dry, the tip reaches a temperature at which carbide loses its hardness within seconds. Work at low speed, with light pressure and water or a wet sponge at the spot. A bit that has turned blue no longer cuts.
The hex shank
The shank is a 1/4 inch hex - the same fitting as a screwdriver bit. That lets the drill go into a quick-change holder or straight into a driver, rather than only a chuck. At Ø5 mm that is practical: swapping between drill and bit takes one movement.
Porcelain stoneware is another matter
In porcelain stoneware the material is dense right through rather than only at the surface. Drilling is slow for the whole depth and cooling matters more still - this is the material that eats the most bits.

Questions and Answers
Which materials is it for?
Ceramic tile, wall tile, porcelain stoneware and other hard ceramic materials.
Should hammer action be used?
No. Rotation only. Hammering makes a star-shaped crack around the hole that shows for good.
What is the diameter?
5 mm, on a 1/4 inch hex shank.
How do I stop the bit wandering on the glaze?
Either tape over the spot for grip, or start at an angle and right the drill gradually once the point has bitten.
Is cooling necessary?
Yes. Ceramic carries no heat away - work at low speed, with light pressure and water or a wet sponge. A bit that has turned blue no longer cuts.
Why a hex shank?
A 1/4 inch hex is the screwdriver-bit fitting - the drill goes into a quick-change holder or straight into a driver, not only a chuck.
Is porcelain stoneware harder?
Yes. In porcelain stoneware the material is dense right through, drilling is slow for the whole depth and cooling matters more still.

At Ø7 mm that is practical: swapping between drill and bit takes one movement.

7 mm, on a 1/4 inch hex shank.
