Bosch 2608706977 is a drill bit for concrete, stone and brick from the PRO HEX-5 range, 6 mm in diameter with a 100 mm working length and 150 mm overall. The shank is hexagonal. Bosch states up to twice the life of a CYL-3 drill bit.

The hex shank

This is what separates HEX-5 from ordinary masonry bits. Instead of a cylindrical shank, which spins in place in a three-jaw chuck under resistance, the shank here is hexagonal. The result is a strong connection and full torque transmission.

More importantly, it changes where you can work: a hex shank also fits a 1/4" holder on an impact driver. That means drilling concrete with the machine already in your hand, instead of carrying a separate rotary hammer for a handful of holes.

The tip

The tip has a continuous carbide edge - the cutting plate runs across the whole tip rather than being made of separate segments. That is precisely what lets the bit survive impact mode, in which a segmented edge chips at the corners.

The carbide composition is specially chosen for hard materials, and beneath the cutting edge sits a large opening that clears dust effectively. That second point matters more than it sounds: dust left in the hole gets ground over and over, heats the tip, and is the main reason masonry bits go blunt.

How to use it

The bit is for an impact drill, drill driver or impact driver. In hammer mode press steadily and along the axis - a masonry bit does not cut, it crushes the material, and excessive pressure only heats the tip. On a deep hole, withdraw the bit periodically to let the dust out.

The 6 x 150 size

Ø6 mm is the size for a 6 mm plug - the most-used fixing for brackets, shelves, radiators and sanitaryware. The 150 mm working length reaches through plaster into the structural substrate, and the 150 mm overall leaves enough for the chuck.
