Makita UB002GZ Cordless Blower, XGT 40V max, Brushless
Makita UB002GZ is a compact cordless blower from the XGT 40V max system, with a brushless motor, air volume of up to 3.6 m³/min and air speed of up to 99 m/s. The Z suffix indicates that the tool ships as a bare unit - no battery and no charger.
A compact blower, not a garden leaf blower
The distinction is worth making, because it decides whether you will be happy with the purchase. At 516 mm long and 1.3 kg without a battery, the UB002G is a handheld, pistol-grip blower made for clearing a workspace, machinery, tools, electrical panels, filters and ventilation grilles, for blowing dust out of holes before plugging them, and for drying surfaces. It will handle leaves on a terrace or in front of a garage, but it is not the tube-and-harness garden blower used to clear a yard - for that kind of area the air volume is simply too low.
Three stages plus a variable trigger
Control works on two levels. A three-stage dial sets the upper power limit, and the trigger is fully variable within the selected stage. The practical value lies in stage one: it lets you blow across small parts, paperwork or fresh paint without carrying them away - something a trigger-only blower struggles to do repeatably. There is also a trigger lock for sustained work at constant power.
Vacuum function
The machine also works in reverse, as a vacuum. That is an unusual feature on a blower and it is particularly useful indoors, where blowing simply relocates the dust. In vacuum mode shavings and dust are collected into a bag instead of being lifted into the air, which matters when working in an occupied room or around finished installation work.
Brushless motor and XPT protection
The motor is brushless - no carbon brushes to wear, higher efficiency and correspondingly longer run time per charge. The housing uses XPT (eXtreme Protection Technology), which seals the electronics and motor against dust and water to IPX4. On a blower that is not a luxury: the tool works inside the very dust cloud it draws through its own housing.
The XGT 40V max system
XGT is a standalone Makita platform and is not compatible with LXT 18V - the batteries and chargers differ, even though the two systems sit side by side in the catalogue. The UB002GZ runs on any XGT battery. Run time depends directly on the stage selected: on stage three the blower drains a pack many times faster than on stage one.
Who it suits
It is aimed at installers, electricians, joiners, vehicle workshops and building maintenance - anywhere that cleaning with compressed air is awkward because of the hose, or where there is no air line at all. If you already work within the XGT system, the bare unit is the cheapest way to add this tool.

Questions and Answers
Are a battery and charger included?
No. The Z in UB002GZ means bare unit - no battery and no charger. You will need at least one XGT 40V max battery and a matching charger.
Is it suitable for clearing leaves from a garden?
For a terrace, steps, a path or a driveway - yes. For a yard or garden - this is not the right machine. The 3.6 m³/min output is designed for clearing a workspace and equipment rather than an area; a garden calls for a tube blower with considerably higher air volume.
Does it really work as a vacuum too?
Yes, the tool has a vacuum function. It is especially useful indoors, where blowing merely moves dust from one place to another - in vacuum mode it is collected instead of being thrown into the air.
Do Makita LXT 18V batteries fit?
No. XGT 40V max is a separate platform with a different interface and electronics. LXT 18V packs do not fit physically, and no adaptor exists to make them compatible.
Why have three stages if the trigger is variable?
The dial sets the ceiling and the trigger varies smoothly beneath it. On stage one you can blow across small parts or paperwork without carrying them away, and do it repeatably - which is hard to hold with the trigger alone.
What do XPT and IPX4 mean?
XPT is Makita's technology for sealing the motor and electronics against dust and moisture, and IPX4 is the rating for protection against water splashed from any direction. On a blower this matters, because the tool operates in exactly the dusty environment it draws through its own housing.

Milwaukee Bypass Loppers, up to 50 mm, 4932498625
Milwaukee article number 4932498625 is a bypass lopper with a cutting capacity of up to 50 mm and 690 mm aluminium handles. It is built for maintaining trees and shrubs, shaping crowns and clearing dead wood.
Bypass rather than anvil - and why that matters
Loppers come in two types and the difference is not cosmetic. On a bypass tool the two blades pass each other like scissors, producing a clean, smooth cut. On an anvil tool a single blade presses the branch against a flat plate and crushes it. On living wood that is decisive: crushed tissue heals slowly and is an entry point for fungal infection, while a clean bypass cut closes quickly. Anvil designs only make sense on dry, dead wood, where there is nothing left to damage.
Forged steel blades
The blades are forged steel. On a lopper the load concentrates into a very small area, and that is exactly where cheap tools give up - the blade bends sideways, the two halves stop passing each other accurately, and from then on the tool crushes instead of cutting. Forged steel holds its geometry under load. The blade profile is shaped so that the branch is drawn towards the pivot as the jaws close, rather than sliding outwards where the leverage is weakest.
690 mm aluminium handles
The handles are aluminium and 690 mm long. The two things work together: length provides the leverage needed for a 50 mm branch in hardwood, while aluminium keeps the weight down so the tool can be used overhead without your arms giving out after a few cuts. Steel handles of the same length would be noticeably heavier.
Two gripping zones
The handles offer two gripping zones with a rubber overmould. The outer position gives maximum leverage for thick branches, the inner one gives control for precise cuts on thin growth. In practice that means you do not swap tools when moving between shaping and serious cutting.
When to prune
Most fruit and ornamental species are pruned during dormancy - from late winter to early spring, before the buds swell. Make the cut just above a bud or at the branch collar, leaving no stub, because a stub dries out and becomes a source of rot. Clean the blades between trees if you are working with diseased plants - a lopper carries infection just as reliably as it cuts.
Maintenance
After use, clean sap and resin off the blades and wipe them dry - a wet blade will rust overnight. A thin film of oil on the blade and in the pivot extends the tool's life and reduces the effort of cutting. A blunt blade announces itself by tearing the bark instead of slicing through it.

Questions and Answers
What is the difference between bypass and anvil loppers?
On a bypass tool the blades pass each other like scissors and produce a clean cut - the type for living wood. On an anvil tool the blade presses the branch against a flat plate and crushes it; it suits dry, dead wood only. This model is bypass.
Will it really cut a 50 mm branch?
50 mm is the maximum and refers to normal timber. On very hard species, or on dry, seasoned wood, work to a smaller diameter or reach for a saw - forcing the tool bends the blades.
What are the two gripping zones for?
The outer position gives maximum leverage on thick branches, the inner one gives better control for precise cuts on thin growth. That way you do not have to change tools when switching between the two kinds of work.
When is the right time to prune?
For most fruit and ornamental species, during dormancy - late winter to early spring, before the buds swell. Cut just above a bud or at the branch collar, leaving no stub behind.
Why aluminium handles?
The 690 mm length is needed for leverage on a thick branch, but with steel handles the tool would be noticeably heavier. Aluminium keeps the strength at far lower weight - which matters most when working overhead.
How do I look after the blades?
Clean sap and resin off after use and wipe them dry - a wet blade rusts overnight. A thin film of oil on the blade and in the pivot extends the life of the tool and reduces cutting effort.
How do I know the blade has gone blunt?
A blunt lopper starts tearing the bark instead of slicing it, leaving a ragged edge to the cut. That is also where fungal infection begins, so bluntness is not only a question of effort.

Milwaukee Bypass Pruning Shears, up to 25 mm, with Sheath, 4932499679
Milwaukee article number 4932499679 is a hand bypass pruning shear with a cutting capacity of up to 25 mm. A belt sheath is included. The blades are steel, and the handles are shaped to fit hands of different sizes.
Bypass - the type for living wood
On a bypass pruner the two blades pass each other like ordinary scissors and leave a clean cut. The alternative - anvil - presses the branch against a flat plate and crushes it. On living wood the difference is decisive: crushed tissue heals slowly and is an entry point for fungal infection, while a clean bypass cut closes quickly. That is why bypass is used for pruning live plants, with anvil reserved for dry, dead wood.
Two-position locking
The pruner locks in two positions. The first is the usual closed lock for storage - it will not spring open in the sheath or a pocket. The second is more interesting: it limits how far the blades open. When working on thin growth only, full opening is wasted movement repeated hundreds of times a day. Limiting the travel reduces that, and with it hand fatigue - a real difference over a full morning of pruning.
Sheath with a metal clip
The sheath has a flexible back panel and a metal belt clip. The metal clip matters: plastic ones snap the first time they catch on a branch or a trellis wire. The sheath is multi-fit and takes both this 25 mm model and the 20 mm one from the same range. Maximum height for the clip and belt loop is 50 mm, which covers standard work belts.
25 mm capacity
25 mm is the upper limit for a hand pruner of this class and refers to normal timber. On harder species, or on dry, seasoned wood, work to a smaller diameter or move up to long-handled loppers. Forcing a pruner bends the blades, after which they no longer pass each other accurately - and from then on the tool crushes instead of cutting.
Cutting properly
Place the branch deep towards the pivot, where the leverage is greatest, not out at the blade tips. Cut at a slight angle, just above a bud or at the branch collar, leaving no stub - a stub dries out and becomes a source of rot. When working with diseased plants, disinfect the blades between plants: a pruner carries infection just as reliably as it cuts.
Maintenance
After use, clean sap and resin from the blades and wipe them dry - a wet blade rusts overnight. A thin film of oil in the pivot reduces effort and prevents seizing. A blunt blade announces itself by tearing the bark instead of slicing it.

What is the difference between bypass and anvil?
On a bypass tool the blades pass each other like scissors and leave a clean cut - the type for living wood. On an anvil tool the blade crushes the branch against a flat plate; it suits dry, dead wood only. This model is bypass.
Will it really cut a 25 mm branch?
25 mm is the maximum and refers to normal timber. On hard species or dry, seasoned wood, work to a smaller diameter - forcing the tool bends the blades, and they then stop passing each other accurately.
What are the two lock positions for?
The first locks the tool closed for storage. The second limits how far the blades open - on thin growth that shortens the stroke and reduces hand fatigue, which you notice after a full morning of pruning.
Is a sheath included?
Yes - a sheath with a flexible back panel and a metal belt clip. The metal clip does not snap when it catches on a branch, unlike plastic ones. The sheath also takes the 20 mm model from the same range.
Where exactly should the branch sit in the jaws?
Deep towards the pivot, where the leverage is greatest, not at the blade tips. Cutting with the tips takes many times more effort and is the most common cause of bent blades.
Should I disinfect the blades?
When working with diseased plants, yes - between plants. A pruner carries fungal and bacterial infection just as reliably as it cuts.
How do I look after the blades?
Clean sap and resin off after use and wipe the blades dry - a wet blade rusts overnight. A thin film of oil in the pivot reduces effort. A blunt pruner starts tearing the bark instead of slicing it.

Milwaukee Curved Pruning Saw, 35 cm Blade, 4932498623
Milwaukee article number 4932498623 is a hand pruning saw with a curved blade about 35 cm (14") long. The teeth use Japanese pull-cut geometry and the blade is chrome-plated. Saws in this class handle branches up to 200 mm in diameter.
Pull-cutting - why it suits living wood
A European saw cuts on the push; a Japanese saw cuts on the pull. The difference is mechanical and it has concrete consequences. On the push, the blade works in compression and must be thick enough not to buckle. On the pull, it works in tension - and steel takes many times more tension than compression. That is why a Japanese blade can be substantially thinner at the same strength.
Two things follow in practice: a narrower kerf, meaning less material to remove and less effort; and better control starting the cut, because on the pull the blade does not skate across the bark the way it does on the push.
The curved blade
The curve is not styling. When pruning overhead - the most common posture with a saw like this - a curved blade holds itself in the cut: the weight of your arm and the direction of pull press it into the bottom of the kerf rather than pushing it out. With a straight blade you have to add pressure yourself, and with your arm raised that is exactly what tires you.
Quadruple-ground teeth
The teeth are ground on four faces. Each tooth cuts with several edges rather than one, which spreads the wear and holds the edge considerably longer. On living wood that has a second meaning: a sharp tooth severs the fibres, while a blunt one tears them - and a torn cut heals slowly and is an entry point for fungal infection.
Chrome-plated blade
Chrome plating does two things at once: it reduces friction in the cut, which matters in living wood because of resin and sap, and it prevents corrosion. Pruning saws are used seasonally and often put away damp - the chrome is what preserves them between seasons.
How to cut a branch properly
A branch more than a few centimetres thick is cut in three passes. First an undercut 20-30 cm out from the trunk, about a third of the way through. Then cut from above, slightly further out - the branch falls and the undercut stops the bark tearing down the trunk. Finally, take the stub off at the branch collar, without cutting into the collar itself: that is the tissue the tree uses to close the wound.
Maintenance
After use, clean off resin and wipe the blade dry. Japanese-geometry teeth are difficult to sharpen and are generally not restored at home - with saws of this type the blade is replaced. That makes cleaning and dry storage more important than on a conventional saw.

Questions and Answers
What does pull-cutting mean?
The teeth cut when the saw is pulled towards you, not pushed. The blade then works in tension rather than compression and can be substantially thinner at the same strength - hence the narrower kerf and lower effort.
Why is the blade curved?
Pruning overhead, a curved blade holds itself in the cut - the weight of your arm and the pull direction press it into the bottom of the kerf. A straight blade needs added pressure, which with a raised arm tires you quickly.
What branch diameter will it cut?
Saws in this class handle branches up to 200 mm. For thicker branches, and for repetitive work, a chainsaw is the sensible choice.
How do I cut a thick branch properly?
In three passes: an undercut 20-30 cm from the trunk (about a third through), then a cut from above slightly further out, and finally the stub removed at the branch collar. The undercut stops the bark tearing down the trunk.
What does quadruple grinding achieve?
Each tooth cuts with several edges instead of one, spreading the wear and holding the edge longer. A sharp tooth severs the fibres while a blunt one tears them - and a torn cut heals slowly.
Can the blade be sharpened?
Japanese-geometry teeth are hard to sharpen and generally not restored at home. With saws of this type the blade is replaced - which makes cleaning and dry storage more important than on a conventional saw.
What is the chrome plating for?
It reduces friction in the cut - which matters in living wood because of resin and sap - and prevents corrosion. Pruning saws are used seasonally and often put away damp.
