Bypass rather than anvil - and why that matters

Loppers come in two types and the difference is not cosmetic. On a bypass tool the two blades pass each other like scissors, producing a clean, smooth cut. On an anvil tool a single blade presses the branch against a flat plate and crushes it. On living wood that is decisive: crushed tissue heals slowly and is an entry point for fungal infection, while a clean bypass cut closes quickly. Anvil designs only make sense on dry, dead wood, where there is nothing left to damage.

Forged steel blades

The blades are forged steel. On a lopper the load concentrates into a very small area, and that is exactly where cheap tools give up - the blade bends sideways, the two halves stop passing each other accurately, and from then on the tool crushes instead of cutting. Forged steel holds its geometry under load. The blade profile is shaped so that the branch is drawn towards the pivot as the jaws close, rather than sliding outwards where the leverage is weakest.

690 mm aluminium handles

The handles are aluminium and 690 mm long. The two things work together: length provides the leverage needed for a 50 mm branch in hardwood, while aluminium keeps the weight down so the tool can be used overhead without your arms giving out after a few cuts. Steel handles of the same length would be noticeably heavier.

Two gripping zones

The handles offer two gripping zones with a rubber overmould. The outer position gives maximum leverage for thick branches, the inner one gives control for precise cuts on thin growth. In practice that means you do not swap tools when moving between shaping and serious cutting.

When to prune

Most fruit and ornamental species are pruned during dormancy - from late winter to early spring, before the buds swell. Make the cut just above a bud or at the branch collar, leaving no stub, because a stub dries out and becomes a source of rot. Clean the blades between trees if you are working with diseased plants - a lopper carries infection just as reliably as it cuts.

Maintenance

After use, clean sap and resin off the blades and wipe them dry - a wet blade will rust overnight. A thin film of oil on the blade and in the pivot extends the tool's life and reduces the effort of cutting. A blunt blade announces itself by tearing the bark instead of slicing through it.
