DeWalt DCF86MP1T-QW Cordless Impact Driver, McLaren F1 XR, 18 V, 206 Nm

The DeWalt DCF86MP1T-QW is an impact driver from the limited McLaren F1 Team edition with a brushless motor and a maximum torque of 206 Nm. It comes with one 18 V / 5.0 Ah battery, a charger and a TSTAK case in the range's black-and-orange livery.

Compact and light

The tool weighs 0.95 kg without a battery - a figure that matters directly when driving overhead or working for long periods in an awkward position. The drive is a 1/4" hex, standard for impact drivers, so all the usual bits and extensions fit.

Three electronic speeds

The ranges are 0 - 1000, 0 - 2800 and 0 - 3250 rpm. First gear lets you start a screw carefully without damaging the head or the workpiece, while third finishes quickly. In softwood or thin sheet metal the low setting guards against stripping and against driving straight through. Impacts reach 3800 per minute.

206 Nm in practice

That figure places the tool at the upper end of the impact driver class. In practice 206 Nm means driving long timber screws without pilot holes, working with coach screws and structural fixings where a weaker machine stalls before the screw is home. On delicate materials, though, that torque demands deliberate use of the low speed.

The McLaren F1 Team edition

This is a limited edition from DeWalt's partnership with the McLaren Formula 1 team. The machines come in black with orange accents rather than the standard yellow, and the battery carries the same livery. Technically the tool belongs to the professional XR range - the difference is the styling and the edition, not the specification.

Battery and storage

The kit contains an 18 V XR 5.0 Ah battery, a charger, a belt hook and a magnetic bit holder, packed in a TSTAK case that clips to the rest of the storage system. The battery is a standard XR pack and runs the whole platform.

Who it is for

An impact driver is the main fastening tool for timber framing, drylining, roofing and fit-out work. Unlike an ordinary drill driver it delivers torque in impulses, which allows long screws to be driven without the machine twisting in the operator's hand.

Questions and Answers

How many batteries are in the kit?

One 18 V XR battery of 5.0 Ah, together with a charger. The "P1" in the model denotes exactly that - P is the 5.0 Ah pack and the digit is the quantity. The two-battery version is the DCF86MP2T.

What is the difference between an impact driver and an ordinary drill driver?

An impact driver delivers torque in rapid rotational impulses rather than steadily. That allows long, heavy screws to be driven without the tool twisting in your hand. In exchange it has no fine clutch settings and is not suited to delicate driving with torque control.

Can it be used for drilling?

Only with drill bits that have a 1/4" hex shank. Ordinary round-shank bits will not fit. For routine drilling, particularly in metal and at larger diameters, a drill driver with a chuck is the better tool.

What are the three speeds for?

Control across different materials. First at up to 1000 rpm lets you start a screw carefully without damaging the head or the workpiece, while third at up to 3250 rpm finishes quickly. In softwood and thin sheet metal the low setting guards against stripping.

What is special about the McLaren range?

A limited edition from DeWalt's partnership with the McLaren Formula 1 team. Tools and batteries come in black with orange accents rather than the usual yellow. Technically they belong to the professional XR range - the difference is in the styling, not the performance.

Does the battery work with other DeWalt tools?

Yes. It is a standard 18 V XR Li-Ion pack, simply in the range's special livery. It powers the whole platform, and your existing XR packs will run this driver.

How heavy is the tool?

0.95 kg without a battery. With a 5.0 Ah pack fitted the weight rises, but the tool remains among the compact ones in its class. That matters when driving overhead and during long sessions, where every extra kilogram tells after the first hour.
