Bosch PRO GSR12V-31 Cordless Drill Driver, 12V, 31 Nm

The GSR12V-31 is a compact brushless drill driver with a chuck, supplied as a complete kit: the tool, two GBA 12V-20 2.0 Ah batteries, a GAL 12V-20 charger, 11 bits and a case. Weight without a battery is just 0.8 kg.

Three torque figures

Bosch gives torque in three numbers: 18 Nm soft driving, 31 Nm hard driving and 50 Nm maximum. The first two describe real work - soft is a screw into timber, hard is a bolt into metal. The clutch has 20 settings.

Short head

Head length is 144 mm - 18% shorter than its predecessor per Bosch. On a drill driver that is the figure which decides whether the tool fits between two joists or inside a cabinet.

Two speeds

First to 420 min-1 for torque, second to 1,700 min-1 for fast driving and drilling. The chuck is keyless 0.8 - 10 mm with an audible click. There is an LED light.

What is in the kit?

The tool, two GBA 12V-20 2.0 Ah batteries, a GAL 12V-20 charger, 11 bits and a case. The case is clearly visible in the official scope-of-delivery photograph tied to this exact article number.

Why is torque given as three figures?

18 Nm is soft driving (a screw into timber), 31 Nm hard driving (a bolt into metal), and 50 Nm is the machine's maximum. The first two describe real work and are what you compare between machines.

Does it have hammer action?

No. This is a drill driver with a chuck and no percussion. For concrete and masonry you need a percussion drill or a rotary hammer.

How compact is it?

The head is 144 mm - 18% shorter than its predecessor per Bosch. Weight without a battery is 0.8 kg.

What are the 20 settings for?

The clutch stops the drive at the chosen setting so the screw head does not sink. For drilling the clutch is disengaged.

What is the difference between the two gears?

First (to 420 rpm) gives torque for large screws and metal. Second (to 1,700 rpm) is for fast driving and drilling wood.

Which batteries does it take?

Any Bosch Professional 12V battery. Two 2.0 Ah packs are supplied; a larger capacity gives more work per charge.
