Bahco Sandflex Bi-Metal Holesaw 25 mm, 3830-25

Bahco 3830-25 is a bi-metal holesaw from the Sandflex range, 25 mm (1 inch) in diameter with a maximum cutting depth of 38 mm. The diameter is printed on the body, so a saw is identified at a glance when several sizes share the same case. The range covers 14 to 152 mm and is used wherever a clean round hole is needed in thin material - back boxes, pipe runs, cable glands, locks and door hardware.

Bi-metal construction

The cutting edge is high speed steel with 8% cobalt, electron-beam welded to a tough alloy backing. The cobalt keeps the edge hard at the temperature that builds up when cutting metal, while the tough body absorbs the shock and vibration instead of letting the teeth snap. That combination is exactly why a bi-metal saw cuts steel where a single-steel saw dulls within minutes.

Variable tooth pitch

The teeth are cut at a varipitch of 4 to 6 teeth per inch. Spacing the teeth unevenly breaks up the resonance that makes an evenly pitched saw skip across the surface as the cut starts. The saw bites more calmly, less vibration reaches your hands, and the finished hole has a cleaner edge.

Materials and applications

The saw cuts ferrous and non-ferrous metals including stainless steel, as well as wood, chipboard, plasterboard and plastics. It runs in both portable and bench drills. The two slots in the body are there to knock the core out with a pin or a screwdriver, so you never have to strike the teeth.

Arbor

The arbor - the holder carrying the pilot drill - is not included and is ordered separately. For the 14-30 mm band that this saw belongs to, Bahco offers arbor 930 with an 8.5 mm (3/8 inch) shank and arbor 1130 with an 11.1 mm (7/16 inch) shank. One arbor serves every saw in the band.

Questions and Answers

What hole does this saw cut?

A 25 mm hole in material up to 38 mm thick, which is the maximum cutting depth of the Sandflex range. The finished hole comes out at nominal size plus up to 1.5 mm, the normal tolerance for a bi-metal holesaw.

Is the arbor included?

No. The arbor carrying the pilot drill is ordered separately. For a 25 mm saw the right ones are Bahco's arbors for the 14-30 mm band: 930 with an 8.5 mm shank and 1130 with an 11.1 mm shank. A single arbor covers every saw in that band.

Will it cut stainless steel?

Yes. The cutting edge is high speed steel with 8% cobalt, which is precisely the addition intended for stainless. Run stainless at low speed with steady pressure and always use cutting fluid, otherwise the material work-hardens and the teeth dull quickly.

What speed should I run it at?

The harder the material and the larger the diameter, the lower the speed. For 25 mm in steel stay at the low end of the drill's range, keep steady pressure and never let the saw spin without cutting. In wood and plastic much higher speeds are fine.

How do I get the cut-out slug out?

Through the two slots in the body. Push a pin or a thin screwdriver through and knock the slug out. Never hammer on the teeth - that is the single most common cause of a broken tooth on a bi-metal saw.

How is variable pitch different from a standard pitch?

With an even pitch every tooth enters the material in the same rhythm and a resonance builds up that makes the saw skip. A varipitch of 4 to 6 teeth per inch breaks that rhythm: the saw bites more calmly, vibrates less and leaves a cleaner hole edge.

What is the difference between 3830-25-VIP and 3830-25-C?

The saw itself is identical - only the packaging differs. VIP comes in a cardboard box for trade use, while C is a self-service blister pack with a leaflet that doubles as a tooth guard.
