Stanley 1-69-100 Stud Crimping Pliers for Drywall Profiles

Stanley 1-69-100 is a hand tool for permanently joining metal drywall profiles without screws or rivets. The joint is made with a single squeeze by cold-folding the sheet metal.

How the joint works

The jaws punch through both profiles and fold the cut tabs into one another, producing a cold mechanical lock. The metal is deformed rather than pierced and clamped, so the joint does not work loose under vibration, and there is no screw head protruding above the profile to stop the board sitting flat.

Why not screws

This is the main practical benefit. Self-tapping screws need separate driving, they protrude, and when boarding you have to think about where they land. Crimping is faster, needs no consumable and leaves a flat surface. Building partitions and suspended ceilings, the difference in pace shows up in the first room.

Capacity

The pliers work with sheet up to 0.8 mm per profile and U-sections up to 1.2 mm total thickness. That covers the standard CD, UD, CW and UW profiles used in drylining.

When a screw is still the better choice

Crimping is permanent, and that is an advantage until something has to come apart. For temporary structures, for alignment that may still change, and in places the jaws cannot reach - a profile pressed tight against a wall, for instance - a screw remains the only option. In practice the two methods complement each other: crimping takes the great majority of joints and screws cover the exceptions.

One-handed operation

The lever ratio is sized so that punching and folding happen one-handed with moderate effort. That matters when the other hand is holding the profile in place - which, working overhead, it almost always is. The handles carry non-slip vinyl grips with stops that keep the hand from sliding towards the jaws.

Who it is for

The tool is aimed at drylining installers building suspended ceilings and partition walls. It has a hanging ring for a belt, which is practical on a ladder or scaffold - the pliers are used every half metre of profile, and returning them to the bag each time is wasted movement.

Questions and Answers

How does the joint hold without a screw?

The jaws punch through both profiles and fold the cut tabs into each other, producing a cold mechanical lock. The joint is permanent and does not work loose under vibration, since there is no thread to undo.

What sheet thickness does it take?

Up to 0.8 mm per profile, and with U-sections the combined thickness can reach 1.2 mm. That covers the standard drylining profiles - CD, UD, CW and UW. Thicker sheet calls for a different joining method.

Why is it better than driving screws?

Three reasons: it is faster - one squeeze against driving a screw; it needs no consumable, so you do not run out of screws halfway through a floor; and it leaves a flat surface, so the board sits true with no screw head propping it up.

Can it be used one-handed?

Yes, the lever ratio is sized for exactly that. The other hand stays free to hold the profile - which, working overhead and aligning verticals, is effectively essential.

Can the joint be taken apart?

Not in any normal way - which is why it is called permanent. The tabs are folded irreversibly and separating them usually deforms the profile. In practice that means alignment must be checked before the squeeze, not after.

Does it need a consumable?

No. The joint is made from the profiles' own material - no screws, rivets or clips to buy and carry. On a larger job that is part of the saving, on top of the time.

Does it need maintenance?

Little. The joints and moving parts take a drop of machine oil now and then, and the jaws want clearing of metal swarf. The main thing is not to use the tool on material thicker than intended - that is what bends the jaws.
