Stanley 0-10-789 is a twin-blade retractable utility knife from the FatMax Xtreme range. The body is metal, with rubber grips and an overlapping nose. Blade changes are tool free through the InstantChange system.

The two blades

The point of this knife is to replace two tools. It has two independent sliders, each with its own blade - normally one straight and one hook. The straight blade cuts cardboard, insulation, sheeting and gaskets; the hook is for materials cut by pulling: roofing felt, linoleum, carpet, belting.

The practical benefit is on work where the two kinds of cut alternate - laying flooring, roofing, unpacking and fitting. Instead of carrying two knives or changing the blade mid-cut, you retract one and extend the other.

Interlocking sliders

The sliders are interlocked - only one blade can be extended at a time. That is no small detail: a knife with two blades out at once is dangerous in a pocket, in a bag and when dropped.

Blade storage

Total capacity is 11 blades: 2 in use and 9 in the handle. On a utility knife that is the difference between changing a dull blade at once and pushing it to the end because the spares are in the van. The knife ships with two straight and two hook blades.

Body and grip

The body is metal - not plastic with a steel insert. The overlapping nose holds the blade steady, without the play that snaps the tip when cutting dense material. The rubber grips reduce fatigue and prevent slipping with a wet or greasy hand.

Compatibility and warranty

The knife works with most standard trapezoid blades. Handle length is about 175 mm, blade length about 62 mm. Stanley backs it with a limited lifetime warranty.
