Stanley 0-10-232 is a fixed-blade utility knife with a 92 mm blade in stainless steel. It comes with a sheath and is rated for use even in salt water.

Fixed blade versus folding

A fixed-blade knife has one fundamental advantage: there is no pivot. The pivot is the weak point of every folding knife - dirt gets in, it loosens over time, and under side load the blade wobbles. A fixed blade is one piece with the handle and takes pressure that would fold a pocket knife onto your fingers.

The stainless steel

Choosing stainless over carbon steel is a deliberate trade-off. Carbon steel sharpens more easily and holds an edge slightly longer, but it rusts at the first contact with moisture. Stainless asks a little more care when sharpening but is unaffected by water, damp material and salt.

That is exactly why the manufacturer specifically rates it for salt water: this is the knife for the boat, the harbour, fishing work, plumbing and anything in a wet environment, where an ordinary knife is covered in rust within a week.

The sheath

The knife ships with a sheath. On a fixed blade that is not an extra but a necessity: a bare blade cannot be carried in a bag or on a belt. The sheath also protects the blade itself from knocks against other tools - the tip is the first thing to break in a case full of metal.

What it is for

A 92 mm blade is the general-purpose length for a work knife: enough for rope, belting, insulation, gaskets, cardboard and sheeting, without being so long that fine work becomes awkward. The knife is a tool, not a lever - use it on materials, not as a screwdriver or pry bar, because side load snaps the tip.
