Rennsteig 350 200 1 is a masonry chisel, 200 mm long, on a 16 mm octagonal shank with a 23 mm cutting edge. It weighs 302 g. Forged into the body are 350 200, RENNSTEIG, 200, CrV and the GS mark.

Hardened throughout

The chisel is made from high-alloy tool steel and is hardened through its whole length, not only at the tip. That brings two things: the hammer blow is conveyed in full into the material rather than absorbed by a soft body, and the tip can be reground repeatedly without reaching an unhardened core.

The striking head

The back end carries a special safety impact head. On an ordinary chisel the steel at the back mushrooms after a hundred blows - and those sharp lips are dangerous, cutting the hand on the next swing. This construction prevents the splintering and deformation.

The octagonal shank

Eight flats rather than a round section serve a specific purpose: the chisel does not roll in the hand when struck at an angle. A round shank rotates and the edge wanders off the line, whereas an octagon has eight stable positions and stays where it is set.

The finish

The body is dip-coated gold. Besides making the tool visible among gravel and rubble, the coating protects the steel from surface corrosion when stored in a damp bag.

What it is for

The 200 mm length suits close work: breaking out joints, stripping render, chasing brick, freeing a brick from a wall, knocking out old plugs. The longer 300-500 mm sizes keep the hand further from the blow and suit rougher work.
