Bosch EXPERT SDS plus-8C Pointed Chisel, 250 mm, 2608901694

Bosch 2608901694 is a pointed chisel from the EXPERT SDS plus-8C range, 250 mm overall, with an SDS plus shank. The tip is carbide and self-sharpening.

The carbide tip

The difference from an ordinary chisel is exactly at the tip. On a standard tool the point is hardened steel - concrete blunts it, and after an hour's work it starts bouncing instead of biting. Here the tip is carbide (Bosch Carbide Technology) - the material that stands up to constant heavy impact. According to the manufacturer that gives up to 2.5 times the life of a standard Bosch SDS plus pointed chisel.

Self-sharpening

The geometry is chosen so the tip wears evenly and keeps its shape. That matters in practice, because a blunt chisel does not merely work slower - it sends the impact back into the machine and into your hands. A self-sharpening tip stays effective through its whole life, with no trips to the grinder in between.

What a pointed chisel is for

A pointed chisel concentrates the whole impact into a single point. That makes it the tool for starting a demolition - cracking a concrete slab, punching through masonry, breaking up screed. Once the crack has started, you switch to a flat chisel, which widens what is already begun. A point on an intact flat surface is far more effective than a flat chisel; a flat chisel in an existing crack is far more effective than a point.

Compatibility

The shank is SDS plus and fits every rotary hammer with an SDS plus chuck, whatever the brand. For chiselling, set the machine to hammer only, with rotation off.

Questions and Answers

Is the shank SDS plus or SDS max?

The shank is SDS plus - it is marked as such on the chisel itself. It fits any SDS plus rotary hammer and will not fit an SDS max machine.

How long is it?

Total length is 250 mm - the standard length for an SDS plus pointed chisel, long enough for floor and wall work without putting needless leverage on the machine.

When do you use a point and when a flat chisel?

The point starts the demolition - it concentrates the impact and cracks the material. Once the crack runs, you move to a flat chisel, which widens what is already begun.

What does the carbide tip give you?

Wear resistance. A steel point is blunted by concrete within about an hour; carbide takes constant heavy work - per the manufacturer, up to 2.5 times longer than a standard chisel.

Does it need sharpening?

No - the tip is self-sharpening. The geometry keeps its shape as it wears, so the chisel stays effective throughout its life.

What mode should the machine be in?

Hammer only, rotation off. Most rotary hammers have a separate switch position for chiselling - rotation with a chisel fitted only wears out the chuck.

Why is a blunt chisel a problem?

Not only because it works slower. A blunt point sends the impact back into the machine and your hands instead of into the material - both the operator and the hammer suffer.
