Pica-Ink Deep Hole Marker, black, 150/46

Pica-Ink 150/46 is a marker for deep and hard-to-reach holes with black ink. Length 152 mm, line width 2 mm. The ink is permanent and waterproof. Supplied as 1 piece.

The colour

This article is black - both the ink and the body of the marker. Across the Pica-Ink 150 range the barrel colour follows the ink colour, so the variant is identified on sight rather than by testing it on the material: 150/46 is black, 150/40 red, 150/41 blue.

The extended tip

The tip is stainless steel, extended and adjustable. That is the whole point of the tool: an ordinary marker will not enter a hole, and even where it does, the thick barrel covers the spot so you cannot see where you are writing. The thin metal tip passes through the hole and marks the bottom.

Where it is used

On fixing through a finished surface: marking the structure behind a drilled hole, marking inside deep recesses, in sections, behind cladding and inside boxes. It also serves for marking in wet or oily conditions, where an ordinary pencil leaves nothing.

Permanent and waterproof

The ink is permanent - it does not smear on contact and does not disappear in damp. Working outdoors or in a cellar, that is essential: a mark made before the rain has to be there after it.

2 mm line width

2 mm is the compromise between visibility and precision. A finer line is lost on a rough substrate - concrete, brick, sawn timber; a thicker one will not place a point with usable accuracy.

Ink or graphite

The Pica deep-hole range comes in two kinds, and the choice between them is not a matter of taste. Ink markers such as this one write on smooth, wet and oily surfaces - metal, plastic, glazed tile - where graphite simply slides. The graphite versions suit dry timber, concrete and plasterboard, where the mark later has to be rubbed or sanded away. Ink is permanent: on a surface that will be seen, it can still show through a thin coat of paint.

The metal tip

The tip is stainless steel rather than plastic or felt. The difference is in its life: a felt tip of that length crushes the first time it meets concrete, whereas the metal one keeps its shape.

Questions and Answers

What colour is the marker?

Black - both the ink and the body. Across the Pica-Ink 150 range the barrel colour follows the ink colour, so the variant is known on sight.

What is the length?

152 mm, with a 2 mm line width.

Why is the tip extended?

An ordinary marker will not enter a hole, and even where it does the thick barrel covers the spot. The thin metal tip passes through and marks the bottom.

What is the tip made of?

Stainless steel, not plastic or felt. A felt tip of that length crushes the first time it meets concrete.

Does it survive damp?

Yes - the ink is permanent and waterproof. A mark made before the rain is there after it.

Why a 2 mm line?

The compromise between visibility and precision: finer is lost on concrete and sawn timber, thicker will not place an accurate point.

How many in the pack?

One.
