Milwaukee M12 CIW14-0 is a compact cordless impact wrench from the M12 FUEL range with a 1/4 inch square drive and up to 56 Nm of torque. It weighs 0.95 kg with a 2.0 Ah pack. The -0 version comes without battery or charger.

What a 1/4 inch drive is for

1/4 inch is the smallest square drive on an impact wrench. This machine is not for wheel bolts - it is for small fixings: clips, brackets, cable trunking, hose clamps, interior trim, mouldings and small engine-bay bolts. That is exactly where a large wrench is useless, because it will not fit and because it strips threads.

56 Nm at this size

56 Nm in a 0.95 kg body is the ratio that makes the tool worth having. For comparison, most cordless screwdrivers of this size manage under 30 Nm. The impact mechanism adds torque without passing the reaction to the wrist - the hand does not twist as the fastener tightens.

Two speeds

First: 0-1,200 rpm at 0-3,000 impacts per minute - for delicate fixings and for starting a thread. Second: 0-2,650 rpm at 0-4,000 impacts per minute - for quick tightening and undoing. A button on the body switches between them without stopping work.

FUEL

The FUEL designation means a brushless POWERSTATE motor and REDLINK PLUS electronics. With no brushes there is no wearing part to replace, and the electronics shut the tool down on overload before the motor overheats.

Impact wrench or impact driver

The two tools look alike and are often confused. The difference is at the output: an impact wrench has a square drive and takes impact sockets, while an impact driver has a 1/4 inch hex and takes bits. For nuts and bolts the square holds the socket firmly and survives the hammering; a hex with an adaptor breaks up within weeks. So for vehicle, scaffold or machinery work the wrench is the tool, and the driver stays for screws in timber and plasterboard.

Working in tight spaces

The machine is short, which is the main reason to buy it. In an engine bay, under a dashboard or behind a radiator, length decides more than torque - a wrench that will not fit tightens nothing.
