Milwaukee TORQUE LOCK Curved Jaw Locking Pliers, 102 mm, 4932493618

Milwaukee 4932493618 are locking pliers from the TORQUE LOCK range with curved jaws, 4" (102 mm) long. Jaw capacity is 18 mm and the tool weighs 122 grams.

What locking pliers do

Unlike ordinary pliers, these lock onto the workpiece and stay clamped without you holding them. In practice that is a third hand: grip a nut, a pipe or a piece of sheet, let go, and work with both hands. Clamping force is set with the screw in the handle - once dialled in for a given size, it repeats on every subsequent grip.

The curved jaws

The curved profile is the general-purpose one: it grips flat and round alike. On a round part - pipe, a rounded bolt head, threaded rod - the curve wraps the material at several points instead of pinching it at two. That is exactly why curved jaws are the first choice for backing off rounded heads and damaged nuts, where a spanner no longer bites.

TORQUE LOCK

TORQUE LOCK is the mechanism that gives faster setup and easy release. Release is by lever: press and the pliers open, instead of having to work them loose. In addition, extra force can be applied to the screw for a more secure grip when the workpiece is especially smooth or springy.

Jaws and plating

The jaws are hardened so the teeth do not deform on hard material - with soft jaws the grip weakens after a few uses. The body is chrome plated, which slows corrosion. That matters on a tool often left clamped on a wet workpiece.

The 102 mm size

Four inches is the smallest size in this category. These pliers are for small, close work - inside electrical boxes, in an engine bay, on small fasteners. Larger pipe and section need a 7" or 10" model. At 122 grams they go in a pocket without being noticed.

Questions and Answers

How do these differ from ordinary pliers?

They lock onto the workpiece and stay clamped without being held. In practice they are a third hand: grip, let go, and work with both hands free.

Why are the jaws curved?

The curve grips flat and round alike. On a pipe or a rounded head it wraps the material at several points rather than two - which is why curved jaws are first choice for damaged nuts and rounded heads.

How is the clamping force set?

With the screw in the handle. Once set for a given size it repeats on every grip after that - you do not readjust each time.

How do they release?

By lever - press and they open. That is part of the TORQUE LOCK mechanism, which also gives the faster setup.

How far do the jaws open?

Up to 18 mm. That is the capacity of the 4-inch size - for larger pipe and section you need a 7" or 10" model.

What is the 4-inch size for?

Small, close work - inside electrical boxes, in an engine bay, on small fasteners. At 122 grams they sit in a pocket unnoticed.

Does the grip weaken over time?

The jaws are hardened, so the teeth do not deform on hard material. With soft jaws that deformation is exactly why the grip fades after a few uses.
