Makita DCO181Z Cordless Drywall Cutter

The DCO181Z is a cordless drywall cutter from Makita's 18 V LXT platform, built for
fast, clean cut-outs in plasterboard when fitting sockets, switches, downlights and
ventilation grilles. It ships as a bare tool, without battery or charger - that is exactly
what the Z suffix in DCO181Z denotes.

Brushless motor and speed

A brushless motor drives the spindle at 32,000 min^-1 under no
load. The high speed produces a clean cut in plasterboard without tearing the paper facing,
and the absence of carbon brushes removes the most frequently replaced consumable while
extending tool life. A brushless motor also runs cooler under sustained use, which matters
when cutting many openings in sequence.

Collet and compatible bits

The tool accepts shanks from 3.18 to 6.35 mm (1/8" to 1/4"),
covering standard drywall bits as well as larger cutters for wood and plastics. Bit changes
are made with a wrench, and cutting depth is set through the sliding base plate.

Dust extraction

Plasterboard releases a fine dust that coats the room and irritates the airways. The
DCO181Z has an extraction port measuring 17 mm inner and 22 mm outer
diameter for a vacuum hose. On occupied sites this is the difference between a clean
handover and a second visit with a broom.

Weight and one-handed use

The bare tool weighs 1.0 kg; with a battery it comes to between 1.4
and 1.7 kg depending on capacity. That weight allows confident one-handed work
overhead, the typical posture when cutting ceiling openings. The housing has a rubberised
grip for control.

Batteries

Runs on every Makita 18 V LXT battery from 1.5 to 6.0 Ah. If you already own
tools from the platform, batteries and chargers carry over and no second system is needed.
