Brushless motor and speed
A brushless motor drives the spindle at 32,000 min-1 under no
load. The high speed produces a clean cut in plasterboard without tearing the paper facing,
and the absence of carbon brushes removes the most frequently replaced consumable while
extending tool life. A brushless motor also runs cooler under sustained use, which matters
when cutting many openings in sequence.
Collet and compatible bits
The tool accepts shanks from 3.18 to 6.35 mm (1/8" to 1/4"),
covering standard drywall bits as well as larger cutters for wood and plastics. Bit changes
are made with a wrench, and cutting depth is set through the sliding base plate.
Dust extraction
Plasterboard releases a fine dust that coats the room and irritates the airways. The
DCO181Z has an extraction port measuring 17 mm inner and 22 mm outer
diameter for a vacuum hose. On occupied sites this is the difference between a clean
handover and a second visit with a broom.
Weight and one-handed use
The bare tool weighs 1.0 kg; with a battery it comes to between 1.4
and 1.7 kg depending on capacity. That weight allows confident one-handed work
overhead, the typical posture when cutting ceiling openings. The housing has a rubberised
grip for control.
Batteries
Runs on every Makita 18 V LXT battery from 1.5 to 6.0 Ah. If you already own
tools from the platform, batteries and chargers carry over and no second system is needed.

Two machines in one body
The trimmer base does the usual work - rounding over, chamfering, edge profiles. Fit the TE 600 plunge base and the same motor becomes a plunge router: grooves and hinge mortises in the middle of a panel, which the trimmer base cannot reach. That is why the price gap to the solo variant is as wide as it is.
The lowest body on the market
Bosch states this machine has the lowest height of any 18 V edge router. A low centre of gravity is the reason - a trimmer is steered one-handed along an edge, and every centimetre of height is leverage tipping it off the work.
6 mm, 8 mm and 1/4" collets
The router accepts three collet sizes - metric 6 and 8 mm and the imperial 1/4". The 8 mm collet with nut (2 608 570 134) is in the box. The imperial size matters because a great many good profile cutters are American and come only with a 1/4" shank.
One-handed spindle lock
Cutter changes take one 17 mm spanner - the spindle locks without a second key. Together with the fine depth adjustment that is the difference between setting by eye and a repeatable profile across a whole run of parts.
Extraction
The kit carries four dust adapters: edge routing (2 608 190 062), surface routing (2 608 190 061) and one of each specifically for the TE 600 base (2 608 000 488 and 2 608 000 627). Bosch describes the machine as the only 18 V edge router with a purpose-designed surface and adapters for high-efficiency extraction.
Noise
87 dB(A) sound pressure and 95 dB(A) sound power at K = 3 dB. At 30,000 rpm ear defenders are not optional - this is one of the loudest machines in a joinery shop.
