The DeWalt DWST83281-1 is a cool box of 25.5 litres with built-in wheels and a telescopic handle, built on the TSTAK storage system. It holds ice for up to 5 days thanks to commercial-grade polyurethane foam insulation and a freezer-style lid gasket.

Five days of ice retention

That figure comes from three things working together: thick PU foam in the walls and lid, a freezer-style gasket around the whole lid perimeter, and an IP54 seal that keeps warm air from getting in through gaps. Ordinary cool bags lose their cold through the lid - here it seats tightly and locks with two catches.

Part of the TSTAK system

The box has TSTAK interlocking latches on top, so cases from the same system clip onto it and the whole stack travels at once. In practice the cooler becomes the bottom, heaviest element of the tower - with wheels and a handle it carries both the tools and the lunch.

Transport

The wheels are 170 mm in diameter and made for rough ground - building sites, gravel, grass, sand. The handle is telescopic and retracts into the body when not in use. Dimensions are 512 x 635 x 435 mm (W x H x D).

Who it is for

The box is aimed at crews spending whole days on site with no access to a fridge, but equally at people buying it for camping, fishing and days out. The combination of wheels, a rugged shell and the ability to stack cases on top makes it more practical than an ordinary cool bag if you already work with the TSTAK system.

Getting the most from it

Cold retention depends on more than the box. Pre-chilling - leaving it closed with ice the night before - makes a noticeable difference, since otherwise the first hours go into cooling the plastic itself. Filling the box completely helps too: empty space fills with air that warms quickly every time the lid opens. Packing large ice blocks rather than cubes also extends the time, as the smaller total surface melts more slowly.
