DeWalt All-Steel Adjustable Wrench, 200 mm (8"), DWHT80267-0

DeWalt DWHT80267-0 is an adjustable wrench, 200 mm (8") long, made entirely of steel with a corrosion-resistant finish. The jaws are extra wide in capacity and extended in length.

Why all steel

An adjustable wrench is a lever tool - the force applied to it is many times what your hand exerts. On models with a plastic or rubber grip, the joint between handle and covering is the first thing to work loose. An all-steel build has no such joint.

The handle uses a rounded I-beam profile - it combines stiffness in bending with acceptable weight, and the rounded edges do not cut into the palm under hard pull. The end is flared so the hand does not slip off when a tight nut suddenly releases.

The jaws

The jaws have an extra wide capacity - one wrench covers a broader range of fasteners. They are also extended, giving reach into tight spaces where the thick head of an ordinary adjustable will not go.

The critical detail on any adjustable wrench is the play between the movable and fixed jaw. That is what decides whether the wrench grips properly or starts rounding the corners of the nut. Here the jaws are engineered for minimal movement between the two - the difference between a tool that does the job and one that damages the fastener.

Laser-etched scale

The jaw carries a laser-etched scale. It lets you set the size in advance rather than finding it by trial - useful when the same nut goes on and off repeatedly, or when gloves blunt your feel for the fit.

When to use it and when not

An adjustable wrench is the universal compromise: it replaces a whole set of spanners in the bag. But on a seized or heavily torqued nut a ring spanner or socket is always preferable, because it wraps the hex on all sides. An adjustable grips only two flats, and under very high force it can round the corners.

Questions and Answers

Why no rubber grip?

Because under lever loads the joint between handle and covering is the first thing to work loose. An all-steel build has no such joint, and the rounded profile does not cut into the palm.

What do the extended jaws give you?

Reach into tight spaces where the thick head of an ordinary adjustable will not fit. Their capacity is also wider, so one wrench covers more nut sizes.

Will it round off nuts?

The jaws are engineered for minimal play between movable and fixed parts, which is what decides this. On a very tight nut, though, a ring spanner or socket is still the better choice.

What is the laser scale for?

It lets you set the size in advance instead of finding it by trial - useful when the same nut comes off repeatedly and when gloves blunt your feel for the fit.

When should I reach for a different spanner?

On a seized or heavily torqued nut. An adjustable grips only two flats; a ring spanner or socket wraps the hex on all sides and will not round the corners.

Why is the handle end flared?

So the hand does not slip off when a tight nut suddenly releases - the moment resistance disappears and the hand shoots forward.

Does it rust?

The wrench has a corrosion-resistant finish. On an adjustable that also matters functionally - rust in the worm screw thread is the main reason adjustment seizes up.
