DeWALT DT4576 - self-feed Forstner bit, 28 mm

A Forstner bit makes a clean, flat-bottomed hole rather than a cone, which is why it is used wherever the hole shows or something has to sit in it: hinges, cable grommets, cabinet joints. This size, 28 mm, is the classic one for running cable through a joist and for recesses in furniture board.

The threaded centre

At the centre sits a threaded PILOT POINT. It screws into the timber and pulls the bit through - hence the self-feed designation. In practice the push you have to apply is minimal: the tool does the work and you just keep it straight. The bit enters evenly and does not snatch as it breaks through.

Three cutting edges and the shank

The bit has three sharp cutting edges - they cut fast and leave a clean bore wall in hardwood, softwood, wood-based boards and plasterboard. The shank has three flat surfaces which stop the chuck spinning on the bit under cutting load.

What kind of hole does it make?

A clean, flat-bottomed hole with a smooth wall, unlike an ordinary bit which leaves a cone.

What does self-feed mean?

The threaded centre point screws into the timber and pulls the bit forward. You do not need heavy push, and the bit does not snatch as it breaks through.
