Double-sided wooden step ladder made entirely from impregnated pine, with 2 x 7 steps and a height of 1.96 m. Wood does not conduct electricity and does not heat up in the sun - the two reasons a wooden ladder is preferred for electrical work and for outdoor work in summer. Load capacity is 150 kg.

Construction

The impregnation protects the timber for years, with no blue stain and no traces of mould. Every metal part is galvanised steel: a bucket hook at the top, two textile straps that limit how far the two sides open, reinforcing rods under the second step, and the hinge fittings. Both sides carry steps, so the ladder can be climbed from either side.

Storage

Wood absorbs vibration and is quieter underfoot than aluminium, but it needs dry storage. Left out in the rain the timber dries unevenly and loses strength - keep the ladder indoors.

Choosing the right size

The height in the name is the height of the ladder itself, not how high you can reach. Standing on the second step from the top, working reach is roughly the ladder height plus about 1.80 m for an average adult. The topmost step is not meant to be stood on - it serves as a handhold, which is why it is counted separately. For a 2.60 m ceiling in a flat a ladder of 0.90 to 1.50 m is enough; for a higher ceiling, for facade work or for picking fruit, start at 1.96 m and go up.

Working safely

Open the ladder fully until both straps are taut and set it on level, firm ground - not on slabs that rock, and not on wet grass. Climb and descend facing the ladder and keep three points of contact: two feet and one hand, or two feet and a hand on a support. Never move the ladder while you are on it and do not reach out sideways beyond the width of the stiles - that is the most common cause of falls from a step ladder. Before each climb, check that no step is cracked and that the fittings are not loose.
