STROXX Tap and Drill Set with Wrench, M3-M12, 15 Pieces, 500-962

STROXX 500-962 is a set for cutting internal metric threads from M3 to M12 that includes not only the taps but also the seven matching tapping drills and a tap wrench. Article number 500-962, EAN 5707436091194.

What is in the case

The set holds 15 pieces: seven single-pass taps - M3, M4, M5, M6, M8, M10 and M12; seven HSS twist drills - 2.5, 3.3, 4.2, 5.0, 6.8, 8.5 and 10.2 mm; and one tap wrench covering the whole M3-M12 range. Everything sits in a plastic case with a labelled slot for each tool.

  • Taps M3, M4, M5, M6, M8, M10, M12 - 7 pcs
  • HSS drills 2.5 / 3.3 / 4.2 / 5.0 / 6.8 / 8.5 / 10.2 mm - 7 pcs
  • Tap wrench for M3-M12 - 1 pc
  • Plastic case with fitted slots

Single-pass taps, DIN 352 form B

Traditional hand tapping needs three taps per size - taper, second and plug. Here each size is a single tap that cuts a finished thread in one pass. That is possible because of the 4-5 thread lead with a spiral point grind (form B to DIN 352), which pushes the chip forward, ahead of the tap.

Which is why it is a through-hole set

That long lead and forward chip ejection are exactly what makes these taps a through-hole tool. In a blind hole the chip has nowhere to go and the thread cannot be taken to the bottom - that job needs a spiral-flute tap that pulls the chip back out.

The drills are part of the system, not an extra

The tapping drill diameter decides whether the finished thread will carry load. These seven drills are precisely the core-hole sizes for coarse metric threads to DIN 13: 2.5 mm for M3, 3.3 mm for M4, 4.2 mm for M5, 5.0 mm for M6, 6.8 mm for M8, 8.5 mm for M10 and 10.2 mm for M12. No table to look up and no size to get wrong.

Material and applications

The taps are ground HSS-G and are rated for hand and machine use. The set suits repair and assembly work in structural steel, cast iron, aluminium, brass and plastics - cutting new threads, and repairing or chasing existing ones. Hardened and stainless steels call for cobalt taps and are outside what this set is built for.

Questions and Answers

Which threads does the set cut?

Metric ISO coarse threads to DIN 13 in sizes M3, M4, M5, M6, M8, M10 and M12. Each of the seven sizes has one tap and its matching drill. Fine metric and imperial threads are not covered.

Why are drills included?

Because the tapping hole diameter decides whether the finished thread will hold load. The seven drills are exactly the core-hole sizes for the seven threads - 2.5 mm for M3 through to 10.2 mm for M12. That removes both the lookup table and the most common hand-tapping mistake.

What does "single-pass tap" mean?

That one tap cuts a finished thread in a single pass instead of working through a taper, second and plug tap. It is achieved with a longer lead - 4 to 5 threads - and a spiral point grind that pushes the chip forward. The job is noticeably quicker.

Can I use it in blind holes?

It is not designed for that. DIN 352 form B ejects the chip forward, ahead of the tap, and in a blind hole there is nowhere for it to go, so the thread cannot be taken to the bottom. Blind holes need a spiral-flute tap.

Can the taps be used in a machine?

Yes, they are rated for hand and machine use. Keep the speed low and use cutting oil when machine tapping. If the machine has no reverse, back the tap out by hand with the wrench supplied.

Which materials can be tapped?

Structural steel, cast iron, aluminium, brass and plastics - the everyday materials in repair and assembly work. Hardened and stainless steels load an HSS tap to the point of breakage and call for a cobalt series, which this set does not contain.

Is cutting oil necessary?

Yes, in every metal. Oil cuts friction and heat, carries the chip out and multiplies tap life. Without it the risk of seizing and snapping a tap inside the hole rises sharply, and extracting a broken tap costs far more than the oil.
