Why four cutters

A classic bit has two cutters and does well in clean concrete. The trouble starts at the rebar: two cutters catch the steel at an angle, the bit rocks, and it either breaks or wanders off line. With four cutters the load spreads over twice as many points, the bit goes through reinforcement without deflecting, and the hole stays round.

The two lengths

540 mm is the overall length, while 400 mm is the fluted section - meaning the maximum drilling depth is 400 mm. The remaining 140 mm are the shank and the smooth zone, which carry no dust. That is the distinction most often missed when ordering: a 540 mm bit does not make a 540 mm hole.

The SDS-Max fitting

SDS-Max is the standard for heavy rotary hammers, from the 5 kg class upwards. The shank pushes in and clicks with no key, and the internal play lets the bit travel along its axis on every blow. An SDS-Max bit will not fit an SDS-plus machine, or the other way round.

Dust removal

The flute has a wide channel for fast dust removal. At 400 mm of depth that is decisive: if the dust stays at the bottom, the bit starts working on its own spoil, loses speed and overheats the head.

When to replace the bit

A carbide head does not fail suddenly - it loses its edge gradually, and the signs are felt before they are seen. The first is that drilling takes noticeably longer at the same pressure. The second is smoke and a burnt smell from the hole. The third is spoil coming out finer than usual - instead of cutting flakes, a dull head grinds the material. Working with a blunt bit is not merely slow: it loads the hammer mechanism of the machine and costs more than a new bit.

What it is for

Reinforced concrete - structural anchors, passing through a wall or slab for services, fixing heavy equipment. An 18 mm diameter suits M12 anchors in most systems.
