Stanley XTHT0-42495 is a compact magnetic torpedo level from the FatMax range, 22 cm long. The body is aluminium in a box profile and the accuracy is 0.5 mm/m.

The three vials

The level carries three vials: horizontal, vertical, and one that rotates through 180° with a degree scale. That third one is what makes the tool general-purpose - with it you set and check any angle, not only 0° and 90°. On drainage, guttering or waste pipe, where a specific fall is required, that is the difference between measuring and guessing.

The central vial is magnified - the bubble looks larger than it is, which allows more precise reading. On a 22 cm level that is not cosmetic: the shorter the level, the smaller the bubble's movement for a given slope, and the more it matters that you can see it clearly.

The magnetic base

The base is magnetic. The level sticks to a steel stud, pipe, track or angle and stays there without being held. For drylining, plumbing and HVAC that is the main reason to pick a magnetic model - both hands stay free to position the workpiece.

Why a box profile

The box profile is closed on all sides and is substantially stiffer than an open channel at the same weight. Stiffness relates directly to accuracy: a level that flexes when pressed reads differently depending on how it is pressed. The ends carry rubber caps that absorb the impact of a drop - the commonest reason a level loses accuracy.

Who it is for

The 22 cm length defines the use: this is the level that lives in the bag or a belt pocket and comes out for a single item - a box, a bracket, a shelf, a short run of pipe.
