Raider 309903 is a screw-type scissor jack with a capacity of 1 tonne. Its working range runs from 90 mm to 330 mm, and it weighs 2 kg. It comes in a colour box.

How a scissor jack works

The construction is a diamond of four arms with a lead screw running through the opposing corners. Turning the screw draws the two side corners together, the diamond flattens across and rises in height.

The advantage of this arrangement is its mechanical ratio: the screw thread turns a small hand effort into a large lifting force. That is where 1 tonne at 2 kg of self weight comes from - a ratio a hydraulic jack of the same capacity cannot match.

The 90-330 mm range

The 90 mm minimum height decides whether the jack foot will fit under the car - with a flat tyre the ground clearance drops noticeably and every centimetre counts. The 330 mm maximum is enough to lift the wheel clear of the ground on most passenger cars.

Where it belongs

The scissor jack is the emergency jack in the boot. It is light, compact and it does not leak - unlike a hydraulic jack, whose seal is a wear part, so a car that has stood through a winter often turns out to have an empty jack exactly when it is needed.

The flip side: a screw jack lifts slowly and requires cranking by hand. For workshop use, where a car goes up several times a day, a hydraulic trolley jack is the right tool.

Safety - important

This jack is for changing a wheel, not for working under the car. No jack - screw or hydraulic - is a safety device. If work under the vehicle follows, it must be supported on axle stands once raised.

The jack goes only on the designated lifting point of the chassis, as shown in the vehicle handbook. Placed under a sill, a plastic trim panel or a sump, it bends the bodywork instead of lifting it.
