4932501903 is the Milwaukee mechanical construction pencil - a site pencil with a protective sheath, a built-in sharpener and a 2B graphite lead measuring Ø2.8 mm. It rides in a trouser pocket like a pen and comes out ready to mark.

The sharpener is in the sheath

The sharpener sits in the sheath itself and loads from the top, so a blunt lead is sharpened one-handed without pulling the pencil out and without hunting for a knife or a loose sharpener. The lead is advanced by a push mechanism - press the cap and the lead comes out as far as the next line needs.

2B lead, Ø2.8 mm across

A 2B grade sits on the soft side of the scale, which is what makes the line dark enough to read on coarse, dark surfaces - concrete, render, OSB, plasterboard and timber. At Ø2.8 mm the lead keeps its point far longer than the thin leads in an office mechanical pencil and will not snap under pressure on a grainy surface. The lead material is graphite.

Stainless steel lead guide

The lead runs inside a stainless steel tube. That slim metal guide reaches where a flat carpenter's pencil cannot - down a pre-drilled hole, behind an edge, into a tight corner. It is also why some merchants list the article as a deep-hole marker; the manufacturer's own name for it is mechanical construction pencil.

The sheath does the protecting

The sheath covers the full length of the pencil and keeps dust, dirt and damp off it - which matters once the pencil shares a pocket with screws and swarf. The clip holds it to a pocket, a tool pouch or a jacket lapel.

Refilling

The pencil is refillable with standard Ø2.8 mm leads. Milwaukee offers two refill packs - 4932501901 with graphite leads and 4932501902 with coloured leads, ten to a box. Spare leads are not part of this article and are ordered separately.
