Which capacity for which job

4.0 Ah is the middle size on the M18 platform - the compromise most crews settle on. The smaller 2.0 Ah packs are light and comfortable for overhead driving, but run out quickly in a grinder. The larger 5.0 and 8.0 Ah packs last longer but weigh noticeably more and make a tool nose-heavy. 4.0 Ah is the balance: a full day of driving and drilling without the tool turning into a weight.

REDLITHIUM-ION

What separates it from an ordinary lithium pack is the construction of the pack, not just the cells. The housing is reinforced against a drop, and the electronics are potted against damp and dust. The result is a pack that survives more cycles and does not give up outdoors.

Cell monitoring

The electronics watch each cell individually, not the pack as a whole. That matters because cells in a pack age unevenly - without individual monitoring the weakest cell is driven flat and takes the whole pack with it. The battery shuts down before that happens.

Cold

REDLITHIUM cells are built to deliver power at low temperatures, where ordinary lithium packs lose a visible share of their capacity. Working outdoors in winter, that is the main practical difference.

How not to kill a battery

Lithium packs are not harmed by frequent charging but by three other things: left in the sun in a van, charged straight after heavy work while the pack is hot, and stored flat for months. The habit that extends their life is simple - let the pack cool before charging, store it over winter at about half charge, and keep it out of the box on the windowsill. Treated that way, a pack of this class runs for hundreds of cycles without noticeable loss.

Compatibility

The pack fits any tool on the M18 system - from a driver through a grinder to lights and radios - and charges on any M18 charger. It does not fit the M12 system.
