REDLINK - electronics inside the battery

The pack is not simply a bundle of cells. It carries REDLINK electronics that communicate with the tool and monitor load from both ends at once. The practical consequence: on overload the system shuts down before damage occurs rather than after. It is also why other brands' batteries fitted through an adaptor perform poorly even when they physically fit - the communication is missing.

Individual cell monitoring

The electronics monitor each cell individually during charge and discharge. The reason is specific: in a pack of cells in series, the weakest determines the life of the whole pack. If it discharges deeper than the others it degrades, and in time the pack fails even though the remaining cells are sound. Individual monitoring balances the cells, and that is the main difference in longevity against cheap substitutes.

Temperature management

The temperature management system keeps the pack within its working range. Lithium cells are permanently damaged by charging below freezing and by running while overheated - the two most common causes of shortened life. A battery taken out of a cold vehicle in winter should be allowed to warm before charging.

Deep-discharge protection

The pack shuts itself off before it discharges below the safe threshold. That is why the tool stops abruptly instead of fading gradually - behaviour that surprises anyone used to nickel-cadmium packs. It is not a fault but exactly the protection that preserves the cells.

2.0 Ah - what it covers

2.0 Ah is the compromise the M12 system exists for: the pack is light and short and does not lengthen the grip, which is the main advantage of the 12-volt platform when working in confined spaces and overhead. On low-draw tools - a drill driver, a torch, a 1/4" impact wrench - it covers a working day. For heavier machines such as an angle grinder or a saw, a larger capacity is worth having.

Compatibility

The battery works with every tool in the Milwaukee M12 system and charges on any M12 charger. M18 packs do not fit - the two systems use different interfaces. The reverse is equally true: an M12 pack will not run an M18 tool.
