Milwaukee 4932493438 High-Profile Non-Vented Tinted Goggles

Milwaukee 4932493438 are high-profile safety goggles with a tinted lens and a fully sealed, non-vented frame. They are certified to EN 166 and EN 170 / EN 172.

What "non-vented" means

Ordinary goggles have vents in the frame so air moves through and the lens does not fog. You pay for that with the fact that dust, splashes and vapours come in through those same openings. On a non-vented model the frame is closed - nothing gets in from the side. That makes it the choice for work with gases, vapours, solvents and liquid chemicals, where a side opening is exactly what you do not want.

The fogging trade-off is handled with a long-lasting anti-fog coating on the lens - in a sealed goggle that is not a bonus feature, it is what makes the goggle wearable at all.

The tinted lens

The tint is for work outdoors and in strong light - cutting, grinding and concrete work in the sun, where a clear lens has you squinting and eventually taking the goggles off. The lens carries UV protection and is marked MT Z87+ U6 S. Tinted goggles are not an arc-welding filter - that needs a welding helmet with the appropriate shade.

Durability and comfort

The lens is anti-scratch coated. Scratches are the real reason safety eyewear gets replaced - not breakage, but a surface hazed by micro-scratches that you can no longer see through properly. The frame gives enhanced impact protection and protection against splashes and liquids.

They are held by a wide elastic strap rather than temples - the strap does not shift when you bend over and works under a hard hat. The high profile means the goggles are worn over prescription glasses.

Who they are for

They suit construction sites, workshops, painting and chemical work - anywhere with strong light and something in the air at the same time. This is personal protective equipment: a damaged or badly scratched lens is replaced, not repaired.

Questions and Answers

What is the advantage of being non-vented?

The frame is sealed and nothing gets in from the side - no dust, no splashes, no vapour. That is the choice for work with gases, vapours and liquid chemicals, where the side vents of a vented model are the problem.

Won't they fog up?

The lens has a long-lasting anti-fog coating. On a sealed goggle that is not a bonus feature - it is what makes the goggle wearable at all.

Is the tinted lens for welding?

No. The tint is for strong daylight, to EN 172. Arc welding needs a welding helmet with the appropriate shade number.

Can they be worn over prescription glasses?

Yes - that is the point of the high profile. They are held by an elastic strap rather than temples, so prescription frames are not in the way.

What standards are they certified to?

EN 166 for personal eye protection and EN 170 / EN 172 for ultraviolet and sunglare filtering. The lens is marked MT Z87+ U6 S.

When should they be replaced?

When the lens is damaged or badly scratched. The usual cause is not breakage but hazing from micro-scratches - you can no longer see through it properly and the protection loses its point.

Do they work under a hard hat?

Yes. The wide elastic strap runs around the back of the head and does not shift when you bend over - the usual complaint with temple-arm eyewear worn under a helmet.
