Milwaukee SHOCKWAVE Impact Socket, 7 mm, 4932480281

Milwaukee 4932480281 is a 7 mm impact socket from the SHOCKWAVE Impact Duty range. It is a deep socket with a black phosphate body and a colour identification ring.

Why an impact socket rather than a chrome one

The difference is not cosmetic and it matters for safety. Chrome sockets for hand use are made of hard but brittle steel - under the hammering of an impact wrench they do not deform, they crack and throw fragments. Impact sockets use a tougher steel that absorbs the pulse by deforming. Using a chrome socket on an impact tool is a prohibited practice, not merely a bad idea.

The deep design

A deep socket reaches a nut on a long stud - the typical case on scaffold, steel structures, machine bases and anchor plates. With a short socket the thread projecting above the nut simply stops it seating.

Black phosphate and the ring

Phosphate finish is matt and does not flake the way chrome does - on an impact socket that is functional, because flaked chrome is both sharp and dangerous. The colour ring at the base is there to find the size quickly in a case of twenty near-identical sockets - a detail that saves minutes on every job.

The 7 mm size

7 mm is the small size - for hex-head sheet metal screws, self-drilling screws, clips and small ironmongery. Those are exactly the fixings driven in runs of dozens, which is why an impact driver is used rather than a spanner.

When 7 mm is the one you need

Seven millimetres is the hex head on the self-drilling screws that hold drywall track, guttering and cladding. It is also the size that goes missing from a set first - it works harder than all the rest together, which is why it is bought singly rather than waiting to replace a whole set.

Questions and Answers

Can I use an ordinary chrome socket?

No. Chrome sockets are hard but brittle - under an impact wrench they crack and throw fragments. Impact sockets absorb the pulse by deforming.

Why is it a deep socket?

To reach a nut on a long stud - on scaffold, steel structures and anchor plates the thread above the nut stops a short socket seating.

Which fixings is 7 mm for?

Hex-head sheet metal screws, self-drilling screws, clips and small ironmongery - precisely the ones driven in long runs.

What is the colour ring for?

To find the size quickly in a case of twenty near-identical sockets. On a fitting job that saves minutes a day.

Why phosphate rather than chrome?

Because phosphate does not flake. Flaked chrome off an impact socket is sharp and dangerous, which is why impact sockets are not chromed.

Can it be used on a hand ratchet?

Yes, it works with a hand ratchet too. The reverse does not hold - a chrome hand socket must not be used on an impact tool.

How do I avoid damaging the fastener?

An impact wrench tightens very fast. On small fixings like 7 mm, release the trigger the moment the head seats - otherwise the screw shears or the head pulls through the sheet.
