Milwaukee HSS-R Metal Drill Bit Set, 1-10 mm, 19 Pieces, 4932352468

Milwaukee 4932352468 is a 19-piece metal drill bit set covering 1-10 mm in 0.5 mm steps. The bits are HSS-R to DIN 338 and come in a metal case.

What HSS-R means

HSS-R is rolled high-speed steel - the flutes are formed by rolling rather than grinding. That is the difference from HSS-G, where the flutes are ground after hardening. A rolled bit is cheaper and entirely adequate for structural steel, aluminium, brass and plastics. The dark colour comes from steam oxidising - a thin oxide layer that reduces swarf sticking and protects against corrosion.

Where HSS-R is not the right choice is stainless steel, and work to a precise diameter - for those, HSS-G or HSS-Co is what you want.

The 1-10 mm range

19 bits in 0.5 mm steps cover the whole everyday range of hand metalwork. This is exactly the set that belongs in the bag: tapping holes for M3 to M12, rivets, cable glands, pilot holes. The shanks are plain cylindrical and fit any standard chuck.

The metal case

The case is metal, with the sizes printed beside each slot. That small detail matters more than it sounds: with 19 bits, several of them half a millimetre apart, a labelled slot is the only way a bit reliably goes back where it belongs. Plastic cases do not manage this for long - hinges and pins break.

Making them last

Metal drills are killed by overheating, and overheating comes from too much speed. The rule is simple: the larger the diameter, the lower the rpm. Push hard enough to get a continuous chip - if you are producing dust, the bit is rubbing rather than cutting. In steel, use cutting oil.

Questions and Answers

What does HSS-R mean?

Rolled high-speed steel - the flutes are formed by rolling rather than ground. A cheaper construction than HSS-G, and entirely adequate for structural steel, aluminium, brass and plastics.

Which sizes are in the set?

19 bits from 1 to 10 mm in 0.5 mm steps - covering tapping holes from M3 to M12, rivets, cable glands and pilot holes.

Will they cut stainless steel?

Not their job. Stainless steel calls for HSS-G or HSS-Co, where the cutting edge is ground and heat resistant.

Why are they dark in colour?

From steam oxidising - a thin oxide layer that stops swarf sticking in the flutes and protects the bit from corrosion.

How do I stop them burning?

The rule is the larger the diameter, the lower the rpm. Push hard enough to get a continuous chip - if you get dust, the bit is rubbing rather than cutting. In steel, use oil.

What shank do they have?

Cylindrical - they fit any standard chuck, on a cordless drill or a pillar drill alike.

What is the case like?

Metal, with the sizes printed beside each slot. With 19 bits, some half a millimetre apart, a labelled slot is the only way one reliably goes back where it belongs.
