What HEPA means

HEPA is a filter class that retains the finest particles - those under a micron, which an ordinary filter simply passes back into the room. On site those are exactly the problem: silica dust from concrete and plaster is invisible in the air, harmful to the lungs, and still settling hours after the work has finished.

When to replace it

Replace the filter when suction drops noticeably even after cleaning, or when the pleats have greyed through their full depth and do not recover on tapping. Working with a blocked filter is not merely slower - the motor works against resistance, draws more current and runs hot.

Cleaning between changes

Clean the filter by tapping it out or blowing from the inside outwards. Do not wash it in water unless the maker states it is washable - wet filter media distorts as it dries and then leaks. Work the pleats along their length, not across.

Wet and dry with one filter

Wet and dry machines carry one rule that is broken more than any other: the filter comes out before wet pick-up. Left in, water soaks the filter media, the pleats stick together, and once dry the filter no longer passes air - suction halves and never recovers. If it does get wet, let it dry completely in air, never on a radiator and never with hot air: heat distorts the plastic frame and the rim seal stops seating.
