Makita DMP180Z Cordless Inflator, 18V LXT, 8.3 bar
Makita DMP180Z is a cordless air pump from the 18V LXT system, reaching 8.3 bar (121 psi) at an output of around 12 l/min. The Z suffix means the tool is supplied as a bare unit - no battery and no charger. The pump is oil-free and needs no sump maintenance.
Preset pressure and automatic shut-off
This is the feature people buy the tool for. You set the pressure in advance, the pump runs and stops by itself when it gets there. The practical difference from a compressor with a hand gun is that you do not stand watching the gauge, and all four tyres end up at exactly the same pressure - and it is the difference between tyres that actually wears a set out and affects how the car holds the road. There is also no way to over-inflate.
What 8.3 bar covers
A maximum of 8.3 bar covers car tyres (typically 2.0-2.5 bar) with a wide margin, and also bicycle tyres, where road tyres want 6-8 bar - a pressure that is hard work with a hand pump. The 12 l/min output matches that purpose: this is a pump for topping up, not for filling a large volume from flat. A car tyre starting at zero takes a noticeable while.
Adaptors supplied
Besides the standard car (Schrader) valve connector, the delivery includes a Presta bicycle valve adaptor, a ball needle and a tapered nozzle for inflatables - air beds, rings, boats. That covers practically everything you inflate at home or in a workshop.
Thermal protection and LED light
The pump has a thermostat protecting it from overheating during prolonged use - a piston compressor heats up quickly and without that protection the risk is real. The LED light has a specific value here: changing or inflating a tyre almost always happens in the evening or in a dim car park, and the valve is on the underside of the wheel.
Handle and hose
The body has a top handle, so the pump can be carried and set down steadily beside the wheel. The hose is around 650 mm and stows into the housing, and the connector has a lever clip that locks onto the valve and frees your hands.
LXT battery compatibility
The pump runs on every Makita 18V LXT slide battery, from 1.5 Ah to 6.0 Ah. For vehicle use a larger pack is worth having: taking four tyres from 1.8 to 2.3 bar consumes a noticeable share of a small battery. XGT 40V packs do not fit.
