Hawera Multi Construction is a universal drill bit of Ø8 mm, with a 200 mm working length and 250 mm overall. The shank is cylindrical, so it fits any standard chuck.

What universal means

One bit for concrete, brick, stone, tile, wood, sheet metal and plastic. The point is not to replace the specialist bit everywhere, but to save the change. A fixing that passes through render, then brick, then a timber batten is normally three bits and three stops; with a universal bit it is one.

The carbide tip

The tip is carbide, ground so that it cuts rather than only crushes. That is what lets one bit pass from brick into board: in concrete the crushing action works, in wood and metal the cutting action does.

The long 200 / 250 mm version

A 200 mm working length at 250 mm overall is the long version in the range. It exists to go through a whole wall - through external insulation, through a double leaf, through a cavity wall. For an ordinary plug in render it is needlessly long and harder to keep straight.

Hammer or not

In concrete and brick, use hammer action. In tile, wood, metal and plastic, switch it off - otherwise the tile cracks, and in timber you get a torn hole instead of a clean one.

Cylindrical shank

The shank is cylindrical, not SDS. It clamps in an ordinary chuck - a percussion drill, a cordless driver with a chuck, a pillar drill. For an SDS-plus rotary hammer you need a different range.

Making it last

What kills a carbide tip is overheating. On a deep hole, withdraw the bit several times to clear the dust and let it cool. A blue tinge on the flutes means it has already overheated - from then on it cuts slower and slower.
