Hawera Multi Construction 265145 is a universal drill bit of Ø10 mm with a 90 mm working length and a 150 mm overall length. The shank is cylindrical and the tip is carbide.

One bit for everything

The point of Multi Construction lies in the tip geometry: it is centred and symmetrical, so it works in concrete, brick and stone as well as in timber, chipboard, metal, tile and plastics. An ordinary masonry bit tears wood fibres, while a metal bit dulls on the first piece of aggregate in concrete.

When that matters

Drilling through a layered build-up: through tile into screed, through plasterboard into the concrete behind, through cladding into brick, through thin sheet into timber. Changing bits between layers is not merely time lost - it also means withdrawing from the hole, and picking up the same axis again rarely works out exactly.

No hammer in tile

In tile, ceramics and glass the bit is used on rotation only, with no hammer. Hammering shatters the glaze and breaks a piece out around the hole. In concrete the opposite holds - there hammer action is essential, or the bit merely polishes the surface.

Working and overall length

90 mm is the fluted section, that is the maximum hole depth. The other 60 mm of the 150 mm overall are the plain shank. That is the distinction missed when ordering: a 150 mm bit does not make a 150 mm hole.

Cylindrical shank

The shank is cylindrical - the bit is held in an ordinary chuck on a drill or a percussion drill. It is not SDS and does not fit a rotary hammer with an SDS fitting.

How not to break it

Universal bits most often break from overheating rather than pressure. In metal and tile, work at low speed and withdraw every centimetre so the swarf clears and the tip cools. A bluish tint along the flute means the temper has already gone.
