Hawera Soft Ceramics Tile and Glass Drill Bit, Ø3 x 70 mm

Hawera 265721 is a drill bit for ceramic tile, wall tile and glass, Ø3 mm in diameter and 70 mm long. The shank is round - for an ordinary drill. EAN 3165140599337.

About the photograph

Hawera publishes one image for the whole Soft Ceramics range and it carries no etched size. The figures are what count: this article is Ø3 x 70 mm.

Why no hammer

This matters more than anything else on tile. The bit cuts rather than pounds, so the hammer action must be switched off. Hammering a glazed tile almost always cracks it - the glaze is hard but brittle and breaks out from underneath, even when the surface still looks whole.

The spear point

The tip is carbide, ground to a spear point. It centres the bit as the hole starts and stops it skating across the glaze - the commonest way to scratch a tile that was otherwise fitted perfectly well.

How to work it

Low speed, light pressure, water for cooling. High speed overheats carbide and it loses its edge in seconds. A little water in the hole carries the heat away and floats the dust out. To start, a strip of tape over the glaze holds the point until it bites.

What it will and will not drill

It works in wall and floor tile, earthenware, terracotta and glass. For hard porcelain and vitrified stoneware a diamond core bit is the better tool - carbide dulls too quickly in those.

Hawera and Bosch

Hawera is DREBO's accessory brand, distributed across Europe through Bosch's channels - which is why the EANs begin 3165140.

Questions and Answers

What is the size?

Ø3 mm at 70 mm long.

Should the hammer be on?

No. Switch it off - hammering cracks the glaze.

Does it fit an ordinary drill?

Yes - the shank is round, not SDS.

Will it drill porcelain?

Not really. Hard porcelain and vitrified stoneware want a diamond core bit.

Does it need cooling?

Yes - a little water in the hole. Overheating destroys carbide in seconds.

How do I stop it skating?

The spear point self-centres, and tape over the glaze helps at the start.

Is the photo of this exact size?

Hawera publishes one image for the whole range. The figures in the description are what count.
