Bosch Professional Engineer's Hammer 500 g, 1600 A03 B6D

The Bosch 1600 A03 B6D engineer's hammer has a 500 g head and an overall length of 322 mm. It is the classic fitter's shape - flat striking face and a wedge peen - intended for driving fasteners, working with chisels and punches and straightening sheet metal. The complete tool weighs 0.738 kg.

Head and standard

The head is carbon steel hardened to HRC 50-58 - hard enough that the striking face does not deform, tough enough that it does not chip. The hammer is built to DIN 1041, the German standard for engineer's hammers, which fixes the shape, the head weight and the way the head is secured to the handle.

Fibreglass-core handle

The handle has a fibreglass core - it will not snap and it absorbs shock and vibration, which reduces the load on the wrist and elbow over a long working day. A multi-component soft-grip handle is moulded over the core and keeps its grip with oily hands. The fibreglass content is 65%. A tether hole is formed at the end of the handle, so the hammer can be attached with a lanyard when working at height.

Dimensions

Head height 27 mm, width 118 mm, overall length 322 mm. The ratio between head weight and handle length decides how hard the tool strikes: the 500 g version is lighter and more precise, while a heavier head delivers more energy for the same swing.

Applications

Fitting and metalwork, driving and removing pins and bearings, working with cold chisels, punches and centre punches, nailing into timber and light concrete work. It is not intended for striking hardened surfaces, nor for use on steel-headed chisels without a suitable guard.

Questions and Answers

What is the head weight of this hammer?

The head is 500 g (0.50 kg). The complete tool with the handle weighs 0.738 kg and is 322 mm long overall.

What is the difference between the 300 g and 500 g versions?

Bosch lists both under part numbers 1 600 A03 B6C (300 g) and 1 600 A03 B6D (500 g). The lighter one is more precise and suits fine fitting work; the heavier one delivers more energy for the same swing.

What is the handle made of?

The handle has a fibreglass core - 65% fibreglass content - with a multi-component soft-grip handle moulded over it. Fibreglass absorbs shock and does not snap the way a wooden handle can.

Can the hammer be secured when working at height?

Yes. There is a tether hole at the end of the handle for a lanyard. That is the standard requirement for work on scaffolding and roofs.

Which standard is it built to?

DIN 1041, the German standard for engineer's hammers, which fixes head shape, weight and the fixing to the handle. Head hardness is HRC 50-58.

Is it suitable for use with chisels and punches?

Yes, that is the typical job for an engineer's hammer of this mass. The HRC 50-58 hardness is chosen so the striking face neither deforms nor chips.

Can it be used on hardened steel?

No. Striking hardened surfaces - the head of a hardened bolt, or an anvil - can chip material off the striking face. Use a soft-faced hammer or a suitable intermediate piece for that.
