DeWalt TOUGHSERIES Chalk Reel Kit with Red Chalk, DWHT48335RC-0

DeWalt DWHT48335RC-0 is a chalk reel from the TOUGHSERIES range with an aluminium case, 30 m (100 ft) braided line and a 6:1 planetary gear system. A 113 g (4 oz) bottle of red chalk is included.

The 6:1 gear - why it matters

A chalk reel has one genuinely tiresome moment: winding 30 metres of line back into the case. On an ordinary reel that is dozens of turns of the handle. The 6:1 planetary gear gives six turns of the drum per turn of the handle - rewinding is six times faster. For a crew snapping a hundred lines a day that is not a convenience, it is time recovered.

Line Lock - snapping single-handed

Line Lock holds the string under tension. On an ordinary reel you have to keep the line taut with one hand while pulling with the other - and on a long line one person cannot. With the lock, the line hooks onto a nail, locks, and stays taut on its own. The result is a crisp, straight mark rather than a smeared one, because the line does not move at the moment of the snap.

The line

The line is braided, 1 mm. Thickness relates directly to the result: a thicker line carries more chalk and lays down a bolder, more visible mark - exactly what is needed on a roof or on rough concrete. A thinner line gives a finer mark for precise work but fades quickly outdoors.

Aluminium case and access

The case is aluminium rather than plastic - a chalk reel spends its life in a bucket of tools and gets dropped from height regularly. There is also an open-access door: chalk goes in through it and the line is replaced through it, without stripping the whole case. The line is a wear part, and being able to swap it in a minute adds years to the tool.

The red chalk

The kit includes 113 g (4 oz) of red chalk. Red is water and fade resistant - it stays visible for days and survives rain. That is exactly why it is used for permanent marking outdoors. White and blue chalk, by contrast, clean off easily and are for work where the line must not remain.
