DeWalt DCW200N Cordless Orbital Sander, 18 V XR, 1/4 Sheet

The DeWalt DCW200N is a cordless orbital sander on the 18 V XR platform with a brushless motor and a base plate taking a quarter sheet of abrasive. The "N" suffix denotes delivery without battery or charger.

Variable speed

Orbit rate is set across 8,000 - 13,500 per minute. Low speeds suit delicate surfaces, lacquers and intermediate sanding, where high speed heats the material and clogs the paper. High speeds remove material quickly. Orbit size is 1.6 mm - typical for fine sanding, where the marks left behind stay invisible.

Abrasive size

The pad is 108 x 115 mm and takes a 140 x 115 mm sheet, a quarter of a standard sheet. The platen uses hook and loop for quick changes of punched abrasive, while clamps also accept plain paper cut from a full sheet - which noticeably reduces consumable cost on frequent changes.

Dust extraction

A one-handed locking dust bag is included, removed and emptied without unscrewing. The port connects directly to DeWalt's AirLock system or a standard 35 mm vacuum hose - working indoors, that is the difference between a film of dust over everything and a clean floor.

Brushless motor

Removing the carbon brushes removes the main wearing part and reduces heat. On a sander that matters doubly: the machine runs for long spells under steady load, which is exactly when brushed motors get hottest and lose speed.

Low vibration

The mechanism uses a dual-plane counterbalance that offsets the vibration rather than passing all of it into the hand. Sanding is one of the few operations where vibration accumulates over hours - reducing it is not a comfort feature but a condition for the hand lasting the day.

Who it is for

The machine is aimed at furniture makers, joiners, decorators and anyone preparing surfaces for paint and lacquer. The quarter-sheet format is the compromise between coverage and access: larger than a detail sander, yet small enough to reach the corners of frames and panels.

Questions and Answers

What abrasive does it use?

A 140 x 115 mm sheet, a quarter of a standard sheet. The platen has hook and loop for punched abrasive, but also clamps that hold plain paper cut from a full sheet - the cheaper option with frequent changes.

Is a battery included?

No. The "N" denotes delivery of the tool with its dust bag only. It runs on any battery from the DeWalt 18 V XR platform. A sander draws moderately, so a 4.0 or 5.0 Ah pack gives long runtime.

What is variable speed for?

To suit the material. High speed removes stock quickly in rough preparation; low speed is for lacquer, veneer and intermediate sanding, where high speed heats the surface, melts the finish and clogs the abrasive.

Can a vacuum be connected?

Yes. The port takes DeWalt's AirLock system and a standard 35 mm hose. Dust extraction while sanding is not only about cleanliness - collected dust is not dragged back under the abrasive, which extends its life and gives a more even surface.

What does a 1.6 mm orbit mean?

It is the distance the pad travels on each orbit. A smaller orbit gives a finer surface with less visible marking but removes material more slowly. 1.6 mm is a figure for fine sanding and preparation for paint, not for rapid levelling.

How does it differ from a random orbit sander?

A random orbit sander has a round pad and removes material faster, but cannot reach into corners. An orbital sander has a rectangular pad that sits tight into a corner - which is why it is preferred on frames, panels, casings and anything with square edges.

Why does low vibration matter?

Because sanding rarely lasts five minutes. The dual-plane counterbalance offsets part of the vibration before it reaches the hand. Over several hours of continuous work, that is the difference between a tired hand and numb fingers.
