DeWALT DCP580N - cordless planer with a brushless motor

The planer takes material at 82 mm width - the standard for a hand planer and the measure at which a board is covered in two passes. The drum carries two TCT blades (tungsten carbide tipped), which hold their edge far longer than HSS and are not dulled by the glue in wood-based board.

Depth setting

Maximum depth is 2.0 mm and adjustment is in 0.1 mm increments. Twenty positions across two millimetres means the last pass can take exactly what is needed - on a door being eased to fit, that is the difference between one attempt and three.

Drum and shoe

No-load speed is 15,000 rpm. The shoe has a large front and rear plate, which keeps the planer steady at the start and the end of a pass - the points where dipping usually happens. Blades are changed using spares stored on board, so the change happens where you stand.

Bare tool

The N suffix means bare tool - no battery and no charger. It is part of the 18V XR system, compatible with over 250 tools on the platform. Warranty is 3 years on registration.
