Makita DUC150Z is a pruning saw - a one-handed chainsaw with a brushless motor, a 150 mm bar and a chain speed of 8 m/s. It weighs 2.0 kg and runs on the 18 V LXT platform. Supplied without battery or charger.

A pruner, not a chainsaw

This matters for expectations. A 150 mm bar and 0.32 kW are sized for branches, orchard work and timber structures - one-handed, up a ladder or overhead. For felling or cutting firewood the machine is small; that wants a saw with a 30 cm bar or longer.

The movable guard

The top of the bar is covered by a movable guard that opens gradually as the chain cuts deeper into the branch. Working overhead, that means only as much chain is exposed as is actually cutting - the rest stays covered.

Automatic lubrication

The tank holds 0.055 litres and the chain is oiled automatically. The small volume calls for a habit: check the level at every battery change, not once a day. A dry chain announces itself with smoke and a hot bar, and shortens the life of both.

Tool-free chain changes

The chain changes and tensions without a key. Pruning, that is not a convenience but a necessity - a chain stretches most in its first minutes of work and has to be re-tensioned where you stand, not back at the workshop.

Replacement chains

The bar groove is 1.1 mm. When ordering a chain, ask for it by Makita's part number for the DUC150 rather than by pitch - sources disagree on the pitch for this model, and a wrongly chosen chain will not seat on the sprocket.

Noise and vibration

79 dB(A) sound pressure and 87 dB(A) sound power at K = 3. Vibration when cutting is 4.8 m/s² at K = 1.5 - low for a chain tool, and exactly what allows a full day of pruning.

Safety

A lock-off switch guards against accidental starting. The saw measures 459 x 90 x 249 mm. It runs on any LXT 18 V pack from 1.5 to 6.0 Ah; for sustained pruning 4.0 Ah upwards is the sensible choice.
