What a tennis sock is

The name comes from the cut, not the sport. A tennis sock is mid-calf height with a ribbed elastic cuff that holds it up without gripping. That is the cut that does not slide down inside a boot - and in a high-cut safety boot a sock that has slid down means skin rubbing on skin and a blister by lunchtime.

Size 37/41

Socks are made in size ranges rather than single numbers. 37/41 covers five shoe sizes; the same model also comes in 42/46 for larger feet. If you fall between the two - a straight 41, say - the smaller range sits closer, the larger is more comfortable on a broad foot.

The elastic cuff

The top is a dense elastic rib. Its role is mechanical: a sock without a gripping cuff rolls into a ball at the heel on the first time you bend down. The elastic should not leave a deep mark on the calf, though - if it does, the size is too small.

White on site

A white sock has one practical advantage that is not obvious: you can see what is happening. Spilled solvent, blood from a rubbed heel, or dust coming through the boot all show immediately. In a dark sock the same things are discovered in the evening.

A note on composition

The supplier does not publish the fabric composition for this article. Where that decides the purchase - a wool allergy, or a required cotton percentage - it is worth confirming before ordering.

One pair

The article is one pair, not a multipack. For daily work the usual arithmetic is five pairs a week, so the wash happens once and a spare remains.
