Bosch Starlock Multi-Tool Blade Set, 6 Pieces, Wood and Soft Metal, 2608669334

Bosch article number 2 608 669 334 is a set of six blades for an oscillating multi-tool with the Starlock fitting. The set covers wood, wood with nails and soft metals, bringing four different blade types together in one pack.

What the set contains

  • AII 65 BSPC HCS - a wide 65 mm plunge blade with Curved-Tec, for hardwood
  • AIZ 20 AB BIM - a 20 mm bi-metal plunge blade, for wood with nails and soft metals
  • AIZ 24 EC HCS - a 24 mm plunge blade for cut-outs in clean timber
  • ACZ 85 EC HCS - an 85 mm segment blade, for longer cutting strokes in wood

HCS and BIM - two kinds of steel

The difference between these two markings decides where a blade works. HCS (high carbon steel) is harder and gives a cleaner, faster cut in wood, but it is brittle - hit a nail and the teeth shear off. BIM (bi-metal) joins a hard cutting edge to a flexible body: it cuts more slowly but survives the nail. That is why the set contains both: HCS for the actual woodwork, BIM for places where you cannot know what is inside - stripping old joinery, skirting full of nails, repairing floor joists.

Curved-Tec on the wide blade

The AII 65 BSPC blade has a curved cutting edge. The curve does two things: it increases the length of cutting edge for the same blade width, and it allows cutting with a rocking motion rather than pure plunging. The result is a faster cut along a long line - a multi-tool is a slow instrument and any gain in speed is felt.

The segment blade

ACZ 85 EC is a segment blade - a quarter circle with a toothed edge. It does not plunge; it is used for long, straight cutting strokes and for cutting along a line already started. On a multi-tool, the segment blade is the tool for cutting skirting, mouldings and panels along their whole length.

The Starlock fitting

Starlock is Bosch's three-dimensional fitting, where the blade is clamped over the whole contact area rather than at a few points. That gives better torque transfer and less vibration, and blades change without tools. Starlock blades run on Starlock, StarlockPlus and StarlockMax machines. The set is offered as universal across other common multi-tools too - check the fitting on your machine before ordering.

Typical applications

Cutting openings in plasterboard and timber panels, stripping skirting and mouldings, trimming skirting in place, cutting joinery and floor joists, cutting around services, opening holes for back boxes - the work a multi-tool is irreplaceable for, because it is the only tool that cuts by plunging in place, without a starter hole.

Questions and Answers

What is the difference between HCS and BIM?

HCS is harder steel - it cuts cleaner and faster in wood but is brittle, and the teeth shear off on a nail. BIM (bi-metal) joins a hard edge to a flexible body: it cuts more slowly but survives the nail. The set contains both types.

Will they fit my machine?

The blades use the Starlock fitting and run on Starlock, StarlockPlus and StarlockMax machines. The set is offered as universal across other common multi-tools too - check the fitting on your machine before ordering.

Which blade is for what?

The wide AII 65 BSPC is for hardwood with a rocking motion; AIZ 24 EC for cut-outs in clean timber; AIZ 20 AB BIM for wood with nails and soft metals; ACZ 85 EC is the segment blade for long cutting strokes.

What is Curved-Tec?

A curved cutting edge that increases the cutting length for the same blade width and allows a rocking motion instead of pure plunging. The result is a faster cut along a long line.

What is the segment blade for?

It does not plunge - it is used for long, straight cutting strokes and for cutting along a line already started: skirting, mouldings and panels along their whole length.

What makes the Starlock fitting better?

The blade is clamped over the whole contact area rather than at a few points. That gives better torque transfer and less vibration, and blades change without tools.

Why use a multi-tool at all?

A multi-tool is the only tool that cuts by plunging in place, with no starter hole, and works flush to a wall or into a corner. That makes it irreplaceable for cut-outs, stripping skirting and working around existing services.
