Black+Decker BXVC20PE is a wet and dry vacuum cleaner with a 20 litre tank and a 1200 W motor. Airflow is 28 l/s, suction reaches 170 mbar, and the machine weighs 6 kg. It is built for the workshop, the garage, renovation work and cleaning up after building work - the situations where an ordinary domestic vacuum should not be used.

Why not use a domestic vacuum

The difference is not power but construction. A domestic vacuum filters air through a paper bag and draws that same airflow across the motor. Construction dust - plaster and cement above all - blocks paper within minutes, passes straight through it, and settles in the motor. Wet pick-up is simply not possible. On the BXVC20PE the tank is robust plastic, the filter changes to suit the job, and a float cuts off suction when the tank fills with liquid - the measure that keeps water out of the motor.

Two filters for two different jobs

The machine comes with a foam filter for liquids and a fabric bag for dust. These are not interchangeable: the foam filter is for picking up water and must not be used on dry dust, which clogs it; the fabric bag, conversely, must not get wet. Swapping takes seconds, but it is mandatory when switching between the two modes.

Blowing function

Move the hose to the outlet port and the machine blows. That covers the cases where suction is impossible or ineffective: clearing corners, drying a washed surface, blowing leaves off a terrace, and driving dust out of narrow channels and grilles that no nozzle will reach.

Mobility and cable

The machine runs on castors and is towed behind you, and the cable is 5 metres - enough to cover a room without re-plugging. Fittings are 35 mm in diameter, the widely used size, which makes additional nozzles easy to find.

Practical advice

When picking up water, empty the tank before the float trips - the machine with 20 litres of water in it is heavy to move. After wet use, leave the tank open to dry, or it will start to smell. With fine dust - plaster, cement, sanding filler - use the bag and change it often: a blocked filter reduces suction long before the tank is full.
