Makita DLX2539ST Cordless Combo Kit, 18V LXT - DHP490 and DTD157

The Makita DLX2539ST is the two-machine kit from the 18V LXT platform that covers the two commonest jobs on site: drilling and driving. The case holds the DHP490 combi drill and the DTD157 impact driver, both with brushless motors, together with two BL1850B 5.0Ah batteries, a DC18SD charger and a carry case. Two batteries cover a working day by rotation - one in the tool while the other charges.

DHP490 - combi drill for wood, metal and masonry

The DHP490 is a two-speed combi drill rated at 50 Nm hard and 27 Nm soft, with a stall torque of 65 Nm. The two gears give 0-500 and 0-1900 rpm: the low one for controlled driving, the high one for fast drilling. In hammer mode the rate reaches 28,500 bpm, enough for holes in brick and block up to 13 mm. It drills 38 mm in wood and 13 mm in steel, and up to 51 mm with a hole saw. The keyless chuck takes 1.5-13 mm, and the torque limiter has 20 settings plus a drilling mode.

DTD157 - impact driver with digital mode selection

The DTD157 delivers up to 140 Nm through a 1/4" hex shank. It is set digitally across several modes - 0-3000 rpm and up to 4100 ipm in the strong mode, and a slower mode for delicate joints. Separately there is A (Assist) mode: the tool starts at low speed until the screw bites, and only then switches to the set speed. That is the answer to cam-out and a chewed screw head - particularly with long screws and on plasterboard. The range is M4-M8 for machine screws, M5-M14 for standard bolts and 22-90 mm for wood screws. Twin LEDs light the work from both sides of the spindle, so the chuck casts no shadow.

Applications

Interior fit-out, plasterboard and cladding, furniture assembly, timber framing, electrical and HVAC installation, building maintenance. A drill plus an impact driver is the standard choice for an installer who would rather carry two machines than change bits all day.

What is in the case

Both machines, two BL1850B 18V 5.0Ah batteries, a DC18SD charger and a carry case. The BL1850B packs have an LED charge indicator and run the whole Makita 18V LXT platform - over 300 machines - so the kit is also an entry into a system, not just two tools.

Questions and Answers

What exactly is in the DLX2539ST kit?

A DHP490 combi drill, a DTD157 impact driver, two BL1850B 18V 5.0Ah batteries, a DC18SD charger and a carry case. It is a complete kit - nothing further is needed to start work.

What is the difference between the two machines?

The DHP490 is a drill: it bores wood, metal and masonry and drives with a 20-step torque limiter. The DTD157 is an impact driver - it does not drill masonry and has no chuck, but it drives long screws and bolts at up to 140 Nm without loading your wrist. In practice the drill makes the hole and the impact driver drives the fastener.

What is A mode on the DTD157?

Assist mode: the tool starts at low speed until the screw bites, and only then switches to the full set speed. It prevents the bit skating off the head and chewing the recess - useful with long screws, on plasterboard and when working one-handed.

How long does a charge last?

It depends on the job, but the two 5.0Ah BL1850B packs are the largest standard capacity for the platform and usually cover a working day by rotation - one in the machine while the other charges in the DC18SD.

Do the batteries fit other Makita machines?

Yes. The BL1850B belongs to the Makita 18V LXT platform, which covers over 300 machines, from vacuums and angle grinders to garden equipment. The kit is also an entry into the system, not just two tools.

How long does charging take?

The DC18SD is Makita's standard 7.2-18 V charger. It is slower than the rapid DC18RC class but charges more gently. Under heavy use you can add a rapid charger later - the batteries are the same.

Is the kit suitable for professional use?

Yes. Both machines come from the professional LXT line with brushless motors, an electric brake and metal gear housings. A brushless motor has no carbon brushes to replace, which removes both a cost and a downtime.
