What S1PS means

S1 gives a closed heel, antistatic properties, heel energy absorption and an oil-resistant sole. P is penetration resistance. The second S means the insert is textile (composite) rather than a steel plate - it covers the whole footbed, including the area under the toes that a steel plate leaves open, and it does not conduct cold.

The four additions

ESD is controlled dissipation of static - required around electronics and in areas with combustible dust. SC is a scuff cap over the toe against wear from kneeling. FO is fuel-oil resistance of the sole. SR is slip resistance, tested on ceramic with detergent and on steel with glycerol.

BOA instead of laces

Closure is by a dial and steel lace rather than cord. Tension is even along the whole length and adjusts one-handed, gloves on. Release is instant - pull the dial. On site the practical difference is that it does not work loose halfway through the day, and there are no ends to catch.

Textile, not leather

The upper is textile. That is the difference from the nubuck S3S version: lighter and more breathable, but not waterproof. For dry interior work and installation it is an advantage; in mud and wet the S3S is the better choice.

Mid cut

Mid cut is the compromise between shoe and boot - the ankle is covered and supported while the foot stays freer than in a high boot. On ladders and scaffolding that is the difference you feel by the end of the day.
