Makita DCM501Z is a cordless coffee maker that runs on 18V LXT and 12V max CXT batteries. The mug holds 240 ml. The Z version comes without battery or charger.

The point of a battery coffee maker

The idea sounds like a joke until you work on a site with no power. On new build, a refurbishment of an empty property, work in a field, in forestry or on a roof there is neither a socket nor a cafe nearby. The only energy source there is the same battery that runs the rotary hammer.

That is the practical advantage too: the machine asks for nothing new - it uses the batteries the crew already carries.

Two platforms

The machine has two battery ports - one for 18V LXT and one for 12V max CXT. The empty port closes with a protective cover to keep dust and water out. That is unusual: most appliances take one platform only.

On one 18V LXT 5.0 Ah battery the machine brews about three cups.

Ground coffee or pods

It takes both ground coffee and 60 mm pods. Pods are more convenient on site - no measuring and no spillage; ground coffee works out cheaper in daily use.

The mug and the safeguards

A stainless steel mug and a measuring spoon are supplied. The 240 ml mug is sized to sit in the machine's recess with no gap - so carrying it in a van does not slop coffee about and dust cannot get into the housing. The machine also takes outside cups up to 90 mm tall.

There is a boil-dry protection function - with an empty reservoir the heater will not switch on.

Carrying

The body has a carry handle and is built to the same pattern as Makita's site appliances - that is, made to travel in a van rather than to sit on a kitchen worktop.
