This is a Krause three-section aluminium ladder (article 33390) with 3 x 9 rungs and a working height of up to 6.20 m. The three sections make it three tools in one: a leaning ladder at full extension, a free-standing A-frame, and - the point of this model - a stairway ladder, where the two supporting sections extend by different amounts so each foot lands on a different step.

What the stair function is actually for

The most dangerous place in a building to work at height is a staircase: the floor is at two levels, there is no flat base, and an ordinary ladder either leans crookedly or will not stand at all. This ladder solves that by construction - the sections adjust independently, so the machine stands upright on a slope. Hence its typical jobs: changing lights above a stairwell, painting a tall stair void, electrical installation in a block of flats, building maintenance.

Construction

The rungs are profiled all the way round - footing is secure at any angle, not only from above. Extension runs on steel guide profiles, which is the difference between a ladder that pulls out in one movement and one that jams. The cross traverse at the base widens the footprint and stops sideways sway - it is essential to stability and must not be removed "to fit it in the van". Self-locking latch hooks keep the sections from sliding apart, both in use and in transport. The feet carry non-slip caps.

Size and load

The rating is up to 150 kg - that is the total of the person plus tools and material, not the person alone. The ladder weighs 13.5 kg, so one person can carry it, and folded it is 2.55 m long at 0.50 m wide and 0.20 m deep - it fits a van and the length of an average loft ladder. As a free-standing ladder it occupies 2.25 x 0.88 m, worth checking in advance when working in a narrow hallway.
